HomeMy Public PortalAbout72-088RESOLUTION NO. 72-088 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON URGING ADDITIONAL STATE FINANCIAL AID TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS WHEREAS, many local school districts, including the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Compton -Enterprise School District, which serve City of Carson residents, are facing financial crises as a result of increasing costs and limited sources of revenue; and WHEREAS, for example, the Los Angeles Unified School District is facing a budget deficit of $37.9 million in the 1972-73 fiscal year and is dangerously close to bankruptcy, thus requiring cutbacks in every phase of the District's operation; and WHEREAS, school districts throughout the State have discontinued many pro- grams and activities necessary to provide a balanced and adequate educational program for their students; and WHEREAS, ad&ional reductions of programs and activities are contemplated by such school districts which will result in a continuous deterioration of the educational process unless additional funds are made available immediately; and WHEREAS, the State has a fundamental interest in maintaining a high level of education because education is a major factor in an individual's success in a competitive society and in his participation in political and community life. NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Carson does hereby resolve, determine and order as follows: Section 1. That the Governor and Legislature of the State of California cooperate in aeg(— ssTafi ve program to provide additional state revenue to local school districts to reverse the trend of deteriorating educational processes and that such funds be provided immediately on at least a temporary basis until a long-term solution can be found to the problem of inadequate state aid to school districts. Section 2. That the City Clerk forward a copy of this resolution to Governor Reagan, Senator Ralph C. Dills, Senator Joseph M. Kennick, Assemblyman Mike Cullen, Assemblyman Larry E. Townsend, Assemblyman Vincent Thomas, and the League of California Cities. PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTED this 1st day of May, 1972.
