HomeMy Public PortalAbout72-178RESOLUTION NO. 72-178 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON DECLARING A CITYWIDE WEEK OF PRAYER ON BEHALF OF AMERICAN PRISONERS OF WAR/MISSING IN ACTION BEGINNING ON VETERANS DAY, OCTOBER 23, 1972 WHEREAS, since 1965 American servicemen have been engaged in combat in Vietnam and other areas of Southeast Asia; and WHEREAS, hundreds of such servicemen have been captured and are being held by the enemy as prisoners of war; and WHEREAS, numerous other members of the Armed Forces are officially listed as missing in action, leaving their families uncertain as to whether or not they are still alive; and WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States has designated October 23, 1972 as Veterans Day; and WHEREAS, the Carson Christian Church has requested the Carson City Council to designate the period from October 23 through October 29 as a week of prayer for the early release of the prisoners and a rapid end to the war, and has further requested that the church and its members be authorized to coordinate that effort. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON DOES RESOLVE that the aforementioned period be declared a week of prayer throughout Carson and surrounding communities which may wish to participate, AND DOES FURTHER RESOLVE that other churches, veterans organizations, fraternal organizations and individuals be encouraged to cooperate in assuring a continual supplication to Almighty God on behalf of the prisoners of war, missing in action, members of the Armed Forces still serving in Southeast Asia, veterans living and dead, and their families.
