HomeMy Public PortalAbout74-172RESOLUTION NO. 74-172 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON SUPPORTING THE CONTINUATION OF THE GENERAL REVENUE SHARING PROGRAM WHEREAS, the City of Carson has been receiving vitally needed fiscal assistance through the allocation of federal dollars under the General Revenue Sharing Program; and WHEREAS, these Revenue Sharing dollars are received directly from the Federal government in a program which enables the City to use their revenue sharing funds to meet the locally determined priority needs of the community; and WHEREAS, these Revenue Sharing dollars have enabled the City of Carson to expand its Parks & Recreation facilities, to enlarge the scope of its municipal government services, and to provide for public safety through its contractual law enforcement program; and WHEREAS, the cit;zens of Carson are being severely affected by the s pirating and unprededented rate of inflation; and WHEREAS, the current inflationary rate of 12% is also undermining the ability of the municipal government to provide essential services to the community within reasonable and acceptable levels of local taxation; and WHEREAS, the General Revenue Sharing Program is providing essential fiscal relief from the severe impact of inflation; and WHEREAS, the General Revenue Sharing Program which was begun in 1972, will terminate in 1976 unless the 94th Congress authorizes an, extension of the General Revenue Sharing Program; and WHEREAS, the termination of the General Revenue Sharing Program will place the City of Carson in the untenable position of having to decrease essential community services; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council and Mayor of Carson, acting as the chosen representatives of the community, unanimously endorse the continuation of the General Revenue Sharing Program and call upon the 94th Congress to re-enact the General Revenue Sharing Program in order to insure thatv,itally needed Federal assistance will continue to be prpvided to the City of Carson. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives from the 32nd District and the candidates for the U.S. Senate from the State of California be requested to publicly state their support for the reenactment of the General Revenue Sharing Program in order for the citizens of Carson to be informed of their committment, or lack thereof, to this essential federal assistance program. Ah,liD BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be immediately forwarded to the following Congressional candidates: Assemblyman Glenn Anderson, Democratic Candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives; Senator Alan Cranston, Democratic Candidate for the U.S. Senate; and Mr. H.L. Richardson, Republican Candidate for the U.S. Senate. And that a public written response which clearly states the candidate's position on the continuation of the General Revenue Sharing Program be requested from each candidate. Res.
