HomeMy Public PortalAbout19330407CCMeeting1 1 Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Ga. _ April 7th,.1933. The regular meeting of Council was held to -day at 4 P. M., and was attended by Mayor Lewis, who presided, and Councilmen Sharpley, Blumenthal, Righton, Logan, Cann, and Town Attorney McIntyre. The minutes of minutes of the the wording in ing inspector, were adopted. the meeting of March 3rd were read, and adopted, the march 6th meeting were also read, and after changing the Ordinance, passed creating the position of build to that of superintendent of Public Works, the minutes Councilman Righton made a motion that any street that has any fence, archway, or posts that tends to block off the use of the street from the public, that the same be removed, this was seconded by Council- man Blumenthal, and the motion passed. The Clerk was instructed to notify the Superintendent of Public Works to have the streets cleared of these obstructions. Petition of Mr, W. J. Taylor, requesting that he be paid $8.00 as the fee earned by him as plumbing inspector on the job of Mr. Miller Ka- minsky, this fee hailing been collected by the Town. Councilman Blumenthal made a motion that it be paid, seconded by Councilman Cann;i, and passed.. Discussion was had relative to renting the cottage, occupied by the school teacher, during the months when the schools are closed, the matter was referred to a committee consisting of Councilman Cann as Chairman and Mayor Lewis. The matter of repairing and putting into proper condition for use dur- ing the approaching season of some of the streets was referred to Councilman 3harpley to handle with the County's authority. The matter of operation of the Bus Service was discussed and the mat- ter referred to Councilman Cann to handle with Mr. T. M. Sunningham of the Central Railroad. The mayor informed Cbuncit. that he had imployed Mr. W. F.'Bexlnet on full time at the toll gate, effective April 1st, the salary to be arranged later, the action of the Mayor was approved. The communication was read from Mr. D. S. Atkinson objecting to the sale of part of Inlet Ave. near the turn table in the event the Cen- tral Railroad gives up its right of way, this was received as infor- mation. Mr. la. D. Hankins complained about the unsanitary condition existing in the neighborhood close to his property, occupied by colored peo- ple, and petitioned the same be corrected, the matter was referred to the Sanitary Committee. Councilman Righton made a motion that all merchandise mia vending machines be assessed a license of $20.00 per machine, effective as of %aay 1st, Councilman Blumenthal seconded, and the motion passed. Councilma* Blumenthal moved that property owners bs granted the 73 74 privilege of using the parking areas without charge every day except aturday, Sunday, and holidays effective May 1st, provided that they have paid their taxes, and also upon the payment of 25 cents for the tags, only one tag to be issued to a property owner,.this was secon- ded by Councilman Righton, and the motion passed. The Aayor stated that he had been informed that the Superintendent of Public Works was doing private work other than that for which he was imployed by the Town and that he had written him to discontinue this, Councilman Righton stated that he was.against any outside work being done by Mr. Bryan, no action was taken in the matter. A'letter was read from Mrs. K. A. Huggins relative to the arrangement of the septic tank -obi her property, but it was decided that as she had a matter existing there that should be handled between her and Mr. S. F. Smith, Council decided not to take'any -- -action in the matter. A petition was presented by Mr. J. B. Sheppard asking that the license of .FIFTY DOLLARS($50) for vending peanuts be reduced, Councilman Blumenthal moved that the license stand as is, this was seconded by Councilman Sharpley, the motion passed. The mayor read a letter that he had written relative to the finan- cial condition of the Town stating that the.utmost emonomies must be adopted, also that he had discontinued his salary and also the.sale- ry of his secretary_4ijythe forth coming year, Councilman Righton stated that this was a splendid example that the Mayor was showing and moved that the letter be published in the newspapers, this was seconded by Councilman Sharpley, the motion passed. The mayor had the financial statement p- repared by Mr. L. G. L%.. Beck- man as of December 31st, 1932 but as it was decided to handle the • question of finances and the adoption of the 1933 budget at a later meeting, the report was not read. The Standard Oil Company petitioned that as they were assessed pro- rated taxes from July let, 1932 to April 30th, 1933 on the new im- provements built on their property and also that -since they had v paid taxes on the old improvements as of May 1st, 1932 to April 30th, 1933, that they be refunded the amount covered by the old improve- ments from July 1st, 1932 to April 3Ath, 1933 based on a valuation of ;342, Councilman moved that the refund be made, eeconded by Coun- cilman Sharpley, the motion passed.
