Executive Summary
Ashley Fields - Candidate
for Confirmation for Tybee Island Fire Chief
The position of Fire Chief became available when Chief Clifton Sasser resigned effective
March 31, 2015. Recruitment efforts began immediately.
The City Manager and TIFD Command Staff met and discussed the need for the position to be full time. Required qualifications for the Fire Chief position were set. The position of a
full time Fire Chief was presented to Mayor and Council on April 16, 2015. The vote was unanimous to make the position full time. The job was then posted on the Georgia Municipal Association
and the City’s websites. Janice Elliott, Human Resources Manager, assisted the City Manager in the recruitment process.
Fifty-seven applications were received. Eleven of the fifty-seven
were not complete and were not considered. The other applications were reviewed by the City Manager and Command Staff. Five candidates were selected for interviews.
An interview panel
was created. This panel included City Manager, Diane Schleicher, HR Manager, Janice Elliott; Captain, James Moore, Captain, Susan Malone, Lieutenant, Angela Grosse, Battalion Fire Chief
of the Savannah Fire Department, Kenny Rentiers, and Fire Chief of Training for Southside Fire Department, Garron Cole.
After the interview process, Ashley Fields and another candidate
were the top two candidates. The interview panel strongly recommended Mr. Fields as the best candidate all round based on education, training, managerial experience along with has many
professional connections in the area. Currently, Ashley Fields is currently the Port Wentworth Fire Chief, a combined professional/volunteer department.
It is my pleasure to recommend
him to the Mayor and City Council for official confirmation for the Tybee Island Fire Chief position. If confirmed by the Mayor and City Council, Ashley Fields is able to report to duty
on July 20, 2015.

An updated background and driver’s history revealed no problems.
Concerns
I have no concerns about Ashley Fields. Ashley Fields will work well with the Tybee Island Command Staff to bring the Tybee Island Fire Department to the next level of volunteerism,
