INSTRUCTIONS TO VOTERS:
PLACE THE BALLOT CARD SO THAT IT LIES COMPLETELY FLAT IN THE BALLOT CARD TRAY. To vote
for a candidate whose name appears on the ballot, PUNCH OUT THE CROSS (+) in the voting square to
the right of the candidate's name. Where two or more candidates for the same office are to be elected,
PUNCH OUT THE CROSS (+) after the names of all candidates for the office for whom you desire to
vote, not to exceed, however, the number of candidates to be elected.
To vote for a qualified WRITE-IN candidate, write the person's name in the blank space provided for that
purpose after the names of the other candidates for the same office and BE SURE TO PUNCH OUT THE
CROSS (+) to the right of the name you have written in, or your vote will not be counted.
To vote on any measure, PUNCH OUT THE CROSS (+) in the voting square after the word "YES" or after
the word "NO".
All distinguishing marks (except names for qualified write-in candidates) or erasures are forbidden and
make the ballot void. If you wrongly punch, tear or deface any portion of your ballot card, replace the
card in the ballot envelope, return it to the Precinct Board Member and obtain another set.
MAKE SURE YOU VOTE BOTH SIDES OF YOUR BALLOT CARD IF THERE ARE OFFICES ON THE
BACK SIDE.
AFTER YOU HAVE COMPLETED VOTING, place your ballot card in the ballot envelope with the
NUMBERED STUBS AT THE TOP and hand it to the Precinct Board Member who shall, in the presence
of the voter, remove the numbered stubs, hand same to voter and deposit the voted ballot in the locked
ballot box.
HOW TO VOTE YOUR BALLOT CARD
STEP 3
After you have completed voting, return the punch lever to
the top position. Place your ballot card with the stub at the
top, in the ballot envelope and hand it to the Precinct Board
Member.

Slip ballot all the way into tray (UNDER clear plastic cover if
there is one) from left side of machine.
STEP 2
Move the punch lever with its red pointer to the right of the
candidate or measure of your choice and completely depress
the lever which will punch out the cross (+). Repeat the process
until you have voted for all candidates or measures of your
choice.

Statement:
Everything I know about what a community can be, I have learned in
Claremont. Ctaremonters rise to complex challenges and work together
to get things done. I have experienced this firsthand as a City Planning
Commissioner, as a dean at both Pitzer and Pomona colleges, and as
president of such organizations as the Claremont little League, the
Claremont League of Women Voters, and the Claremont High School
Theatre Boosters.
This is a pivotal moment in our history. As a city we must recommit to a
process where all voices are valued and the vision of the Claremont we
are shaping is at the heart of every decision we make. My experience
in community building and conflict resolution will be valuable in this
process. Among my priorities:
~ Effective partnerships among city, schools, library, colleges, non-
profits, and the police to serve our youth, seniors, and families

'Declaracion:
Todo 10 que yo se sobre 10 que puede ser una comunidad, 10 he aprendido
:en Claremont. Los de Claremont se ponen a la altura de desaffos
complejos y trabajan juntos para hacerse cargo de las cosas. Yo he
experimentado esto personalmente como Comisionada de Planificaci6n
Municipal; como decana en los colegios universitarios de Pitzer 10
mismo que Pomona, y como presidenta de tales organizaciones como
Claremont Little League, La Liga de Mujeres Votantes de Claremont, y
"Theatre Boosters" de la escuela secundaria Claremont High School.
Este --esun momento crucial .en nuestra historia. Como ciudad,
debemos recomprometernos a un proceso donde se Ie de valor a todas
las voces y la vision de Claremont que nosotros formemos este en el
centro de tada decision que tomemos. Mi experiencia en construir

When you elected me in 2003, I promised to ensure all financial decisions
were made prudently and fairly to benefit all of Claremont, to make public
documents more available, to televise city council meetings, and to vote
to eliminate special city council perks. I have kept those promises.
Since my election, I have worked diligently to research every issue
that comes before council. I do my own inquiry, ask detailed questions
of staff and citizens, and make my decisions based on sound policy
that benefits all of Claremont. I am the only councilmember that read
all three versions of the General Plan before voting on it, and give the
same scrutiny to all issues that come before me. I vote knowing your
interests are at stake.
If you re-elect me in March, I will continue to work with the same diligence
and attention to detail that has served you well these past four years.
In the next four years, our city will face many challenges. We will meet
these challenges as we have met the challenges of the past ---V'ith
courage, determination, and respect for the will of the people. I ask for
your vote on March 6th.

cada asunto problematico que se presenta ante el concejo. Yo hago
mi propia indagacion, hago preguntas detalladas del personal y
105 ciudadanos, y tomo mis decisiones basandome en una practica
sensata que beneficia a todo Claremont. Yo soy la (mica concejal que

As a 1 O-year resident of Claremont, I have come to love the people and
the history of the city. From the pioneering spirit of the earliest settlers
to the new spirit of expansion of the Village, I have found inspiration in
the lives of those who worked hard to make Claremont a great place to
live and raise a family. Now it's my turn to make a difference.
My priorities are simple:
. Provide a clear, strong voice for the underrepresented residents of
south Claremont where I live.
. Focus on the senior and youth programs so necessary to the
health of the community.
." Fight for a stronger police presence in the city to protect and serve
our interests.
My background as a supervisor and active leader in my church
congregation combined with education, a bachelor's of science degree
in justice studies from Arizona State University, ensure' can effectively
contribute to city governance in a positive manner.
My wife, two kids and I have enjoyed everything Claremont has to offer.

para hacer de Claremont un gran lugar para vivir y criar a una familia.
Ahora es mi turno en hacer una diferencia.
Mis priorida,des son simples:
. -Contribuir una voz clara, tuerte, para 105 residentes pobremente
representados del sur de Claremont donde yo vivo.
. Concentrarme en los programas para personas de edad y j6venes

Our family moved to Claremont because it is a community that values
its historical beginnings, is rich in its diversity of citizens and strives to
embrace a wide range of viewpoints and ideas. This is the city that I
know and the city that I want to serve.
As a Commissioner and member of the General Plan Citizens Committee,
I worked to preserve our remaining open spaces that, along with our
distinctive neighborhoods, maintain our historical sense of pi ace. Those
are the same values I promote as a board member on Claremont Heritage
and the Claremont Wildlands Conservancy.
Our challenges in the future are daunting: From local control of our
water supply to an improved police station: from building a stronger
local economy to averting an aggressive mining proposal; to realizing
the fields and programs that meet the needs of our youth and families.
We need to include our varied beliefs and foster solutions that reflect
the reasons we live here.
I accept the challenge and will go forward to advance our city's collective
vision, the recently adopted General Plan. On your behalf, I will work
to maintain Claremont's standards and principles for the benefit of the
entire community.

servir.
Como su Comisionado y miembro del Comite de Ciudadanos del
Plan General, yo trabaje para preservar nuestros espacios al aire
libre permanecientes que, junto con nuestros distintivos vecindarios,
mantienen nuestra sensaci6n de lugar hist6rico. Estos son los mismo
valores que yo promuevo como miembro de la junta en "Claremont
Heritage" y la Conservaci6n de Tierras Agrestes de Claremont.

serve them. The people, in delegating authority, do not give their public
servants the right to decide what is good for the people to know and what
is not good for them to know. The people insist on remaining informed so
that they may retain control over the instruments they have created.
Under this spirit of Open Government I will seek to carry Qut my duties
and responsibilities to uphold California's concept of a General Plan city.
.Seek to implement the goals and policies of Claremont's new
"Sustainability" based General Plan and move from concept to operation
under the plan's Vision.

sirven. EI pueblo, al delegar autoridad, no Ie entrega a sus servidores
publicos el derecho de decidir 10 que es bueno que el pueblo sepa y
10 que no es bueno que ellos sepan. EI pueblo insiste en permanecer
informado para que ellos puedan retener el control sobre los
instrumentos que ellos han creado.
Bajo'- este espfritu de Gobierno Abierto, voy a tratar de lIevar a cabo
mis deberes y responsabilidades para mantener en alto el concepto de
California de una ciudad de Plan General.
Voy a tratar de implementar las metas y practicas del nuevo Plan
General basado en un "Caracter Inclusivo" y continuar de concepto a
operaci6n bajo la Visi6n del plan.

It has been my great honor to serve as a Council Member and current
Mayor of the City of Claremont. I hope you can agree with me that our
city government has been more open to wider participation. I believe
the Council has improved transparency in its dealings with the public.
Other accomplishments I consider important are, saving the historic
Packing House. Growing the city in an environmentally friendly and
resource efficient manner. Promoting a city management team that
extends its concerns and care to every segment of the wider community,
passing of the Inclusionary Housing Ordinance by a unanimous council

know the Claremont community is grateful that the City can preserve
open space with the purchase of Johnson's Pasture.
I feel my work is not yet complete. My highest priority is to preserve
Claremont value. I will work to sustain Claremont as a safe haven for
all citizens; maintain our community as an ideal place to raise a family
with good schools, parks, sports, youth and family programs. Finally, I
will continue to promote a social environment that foster mutual respect
and participation in civic life.

Ha side mi gran honor rendir servicio como Miembro del Concejo y
actual Alcalde de la Ciudad de Claremont. Espero que puedan estar de
acuerdo conmigo que nuestro gobierno municipal ha sido mas abierto
a una participaci6n mayor. Yo creo que el Concejo ha mejorado la
transparencia en sus tratos con el publico.
Otros logros que yo considero importantes son: salvar la hist6rica Casa
de Empaque (Packing House). Que la ciudad crezca de una manera
favorable al medio ambiente y eficiente en sus recursos. Promover
un equipo de gerencia municipal que extienda sus preocupaciones y
cuidado a cada segmento de la comunidad en su totalidad. Pasar la
Ordenanza de Vivienda de Caracter Inclusivo por un voto unanime del
concejo, y el seguir adelante con el proyecto de vivienda econ6mica.
Yo tam bien se que la comunidad de Claremont agradece el que la
Ciudad haya logrado preservar su espacio abierto con la compra del
Campo de Pasto Johnson.
Yo siento que mi trabajo todavfa no esta completo. Mi prioridad mas alta
es la de preservar el valor de Claremont. Voy a trabajar para sostener
a Claremont como un refugio seguro para todos 105 ciudadanos;
mantener nuestra comunidad como un lugar ideal para criar una familia
con buenas escuelas, parques, deportes, y programas de juventud y
familia. Finalmente, voy a continuar promoviendo un ambiente social
que fomenta el respeto mutuo y la participacion en la vida civica.

Claremont deserves honest and open-minded leaders, working for
responsible and constructive solutions. I will provide that kind of
leadership by talking with residents and learning from their experiences.
The best solutions are reached through respectful dialogue between those
of diverse views who are willing to work together for the common good.
I was guided by this principle during my eight years on the City's Traffic
and Transportation Commission, and in my previous work in municipal
government and in the private sector.
Claremont residents have always believed in Harambee - Swahili for
'individuals working positively together to achieve community goals'. In
this spirit, we recently built six affordable "Habitat for Humanity" houses
and passed Measure S to preserve Johnson's Pasture. There is much to
appreciate and to maintain in our community, but we can do even more,
including addressing police facility needs and providing appropriate
sports and recreational facilities for our children.
As your council member, 1 will do my best to give the city to future
generations in an even better form than we now enjoy. I ask for your
vote to help me ensure that Claremont continues to be an exceptional
and desirable place to live.

esta c1ase de liderazgo al platicar con 105 residentes y aprender de
sus experiencias. Se lIega alas mejores soluciones a traves de un
dialogo respetuoso entre aquel10s que tienen opiniones diversas que
estan dispuestos a trabajar juntos para el bien comun. Yo fui guiado
por este principio durante mis ocho anos en la Comision Municipal de
Trafico y Transportacj6n, yen mi previo trabajo en el gobierno municipal
y en 'el sector privado.
Los residentes de Claremont siempre han crefdo en "Harambee"---
el nombre en Suahili para individuos que trabajan juntos de manera
positiva para lograr metas de la comunidad. Con este espiritu, nosotros
recientemente construimos seis casas econ6micas de "Habitat for
Humanity" y aprobamos la Medida S para preservar el Campo de Pasta
Johnson. Hay mucho que apreciar y mantener en nuestra comunidad,
pero podemos hacer aun mas, incluyendo hacernos cargo de las
