WHEREAS, children start down the trail to become readers from the day they
are born; and
WHERAS, libraries are a great place to start on the journey to lifelong learning;
and
WHEREAS, parents are their child's first teacher, preparing their child to be ready to
learn upon entering school and helping their child to succeed in school; and
WHEREAS, research shows that infants and children who are read to are more
enthusiastic about reading, are more successful in school, are better readers, and are
more likely to remain lifelong readers; and
WHEREAS, in January 1999, Governor Dirk Kempthorne proclaimed this to be the
"Generation of the Child" in his inauguration speech; and
WHEREAS, in March, 1999, the Idaho Legislature enacted Idaho's Child Literacy Act
into law; and
WHEREAS, public libraries have programs and materials which help parents nurture
their child's developing literacy and encourage the joy of reading as a family activity;
and
WHEREAS, the Idaho State Library, the State Department of Education, the Office of
the Governor's "Generation of the Child" Initiative, Idaho Public Television, and the
Lee Pesky Learning Center are supporting Idaho Family Reading Week; and
WHEREAS, schools, libraries, and community organizations across the state have
planned activities to l
celebrate Idaho Family Reading Week;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, _ 6_ I oh Cz --ft n , Mayor of
1n_0_0_6_ 1 1 , do hereby proclaim the week of November 16 through 22, to
recognize
Family Reading Week
in n\C C!t l \ , and call upon all parents to read aloud to their children
every day and to visit their local public library for information and materials to help
with reading.
