What I have discovered is that this incredibly modern, diverse, entrepreneurial, forward -thinking, family-oriented town, full of civic pride, has always been this way. From its inception, Temple City has found strength in its civic organizations, from common agricultural interests to its investment in civic buildings and public parks. One of the most important investments was in bringing the Pacific Electric Railway Company's "Red Cars" to town. Joining the Alhambra -San Gabriel Line connected this small farming town to many other business and cultural opportunities, and forever changed the face and character of Temple City. With this forward - thinking vision of a bigger and better future, it put Temple City on track, literally, to become the thriving, diverse, creative community it is today. I will create two sculptures to try to capture some of this spirit. The are tentatively titled "Jump On" and "Helping Hand/Reaching Out". My message is simple: "Temple City is a city on the move, always has been, always will be. So jump on board and together we can ride this train boldly into the future." In both sculptures, the small piece of an historic Red Car represent the city. I will try to give it a sense of forward motion, solid momentum. Its wheels are powering through the concrete plinth, a feeling of breaking through barriers. Its steps are reaching down to the seating area, connecting our visitors to the sculpture in a fun and interactive -feeling way. But it is the figures in the sculptures that I hope people really connect with. In "Jump On", the Mr. Temple City is stretching with maximum effort to be sure that he is on the "Temple City Red Car Trolley To The Future". He is Dressed for Success and he is willing to take a Leap of Faith in order to be a part of this forward -thinking community. There is optimism in his body language and you feel that he is taking a chance worth taking, and that he is definitely going to land safely on his feet. In 'Helping Hand/Reaching Out", Ms. Temple City is showing another side to this forward -moving city. From the very beginning, Temple City has had a strong civic pride. A core value of neighbor helping neighbor, of welcoming new immigrants from many cultures, and of always reaching out to lend a helping hand. In this sculpture, she is also Dressed for Success. She has been onboard the "Temple City Red Car Trolley To The Future" the whole time, knowing that this is the ride to a better tomorrow. But her instincts also tell her to reach back, to give that helping hand to someone who might otherwise get left behind. Her hand is open and ready for anyone to grab hold, anyone at all, because all are welcome. She does this not with obligation but with joy. She too is taking some risk by leaning out off the moving train, but she also conveys a confident optimism that lets us know that she, and we, are going to have a safe landing and an amazing trip together. She is the embodiment of all of the volunteers, citizens, businesses, government organizations, religious institutions, and public servants who always are looking for a way to give back to this community, knowing that we are only as strong as the weakest amongst us. The materials and patinas that I use with also try to balance a sense of history and a contemporary feel. Bronze is the most traditional of materials used in public art, from Roman times until today, because of its strength, its durability and the ease with which it can be colored in a vast array of patinas. I plan on using a combination of traditional patinas, the deep golden color associated with traditional bronze, as well as some more dynamic colorings, reds and steel -colored patinas, to accent the thematic aspects of the sculpture, i.e., the trolley, the Camellia flowers in their lapels. I hope these sculptures can create an iconic image for the city to play with, a thread between these first two community -gathering spaces that are a part of the Rosemead Development Plan, and that can be continued through more of these spaces as they are developed. It will be fun for the vehicular traffic to see these homages to our transportation system of yore, and share a taste of that optimism as they head on their way to their own exciting destinies. My hope is that our visitors will feel connected and invited into these pieces, feeling the optimism. My hope is that one day when I come to visit my sculptures, I find some people taking pictures of themselves getting onboard the "Temple City Red Car Train To The Future", leaning forward, and feeling confident and happy as Temple City rolls into tomorrow with new industries, new immigrants and new dreams. 10350 Santa Monica Blvd. Suite 130 Los Angeles California 90025 Daniel Stern Art (310)962-5759 - Daniel®danielsternartcom www.danielsternart.com f TEMPLE CITY BUMGET $ 2,000 Sculpting materials $1,000 each x2 $ 8,000 Armature $4,000 each x2 $ 6,000 Mold price- figure $3,000 each x2 $ 4,000 Mold price -trolley $2,000 each x2 $ 14,000 Casting figure -bronze $7,000 each x2 $ 6,000 Casting/fabrication of trolley $3,000 each x2 $ 1,000 Transportation $ 500 each x2 $ 9.000 Artist vavment $50,000 Note: - The molding, casting, transportation estimates are from MC3 Foundry. They have a great reputation of making and installing monumental sculptures all over the country. - I have a similar quote from Pinzon Foundry. I have to see if one of their managers, Dan Medina, is available in our timeline. I would do it there only if he was in charge of the project. - Sandy Decker's estimates were too expensive and would result in diminishing the scope of the sculpture. - These prices should be close to final prices but they are only estimates and the final price will be determined by the final designs, materials, engineering issues, foundries chosen, scheduling issues, etc. D.S. The metal and patina are protected from the elements with wax. A simple clear paste wax like Johnson's clear paste wax or Trewax clear paste wax. Depending on how much rain and weather, a new coat of wax should be applied about once a year to maintain the original patina. If during the year, the sculpture should become dirty with dust, bird droppings, etc., it can be easily cleaned with a very mild soap, like Ivory soap, and gentle cleaning with either a rag or a light brush. 10350 Santa Monica Blvd. Suite 130 Daniel c n Los Angeles, California 90025 Daniel Stern Art (310)962-5759 Daniel@danielstemn .com ww W.danielsternartxorn TEMPLE CITY TIME LINE Consult with Commission and sign off on final design TBD ➢ Build armatures 6 weeks ➢ Sculpting 3 months ➢ Mold making/Casting/Finishing 5 months ➢ Preparation of site TBD NOTES: - Processes will over lap. For instance, I will receive the first foam armature in three weeks and begin sculpting while the second foam figure is being cut. The same is true as I finish the first sculpture. As it heads to the foundry, I will be working on the second piece. In total, from the time the final design is approved, both pieces should be completed and ready to install in 6 months. Maybe sooner but 6 month is a safe estimate. D.S.
