Re: Victory Field
I was very pleased when the Town Council voted to support the installation of an artificial playing
surface at Victory Field. As I reflect back at the activities that the grass surface could handle and the
amount of events that are now held on the new field; I say "WOW".
In the past there were baseball and football games and practices. Now as I go by the field I see high
school and youth soccer games and practices, Watertown High School added a Boys' and Girls' Lacrosse
Program the plays games and holds practices on the field. The Watertown Youth Lacrosse Program
which started around six years ago now finds game and practice times on the field. There is no way the
grass field could have handled this amount of activities.
Postponements, due to weather, it the past created problems for teams and the Recreation
Department. Now postponements are pretty much a thing of the past. I don't know if there has been a
safety study, but my observations lead me to believe the playing surface is safer than in the past.
During the dry weather the amount infield dirt that was blown around the neighborhood. created
problems . Once again this is now a bygone issue.
I hear that there is some thought about looking into doing the inside of the track over with an artificial
surface. I believe this would be another big plus for the citizens of the town. Their leisure time and
physical activities would be greatly enhanced. This would also take the area away from the Canadian
Geese who make for very messy situation.
In closing let me thank the Town Council for their past support of the improvements to Victory Field and
please look into what other improvements could be made to the park.
