Development Manager By: Chelsea Pitcher, Management Analyst SUBJECT: PUBLIC ARTS COMMISSION ACTIONS-MEETING OF AUGUST 22, 2013 RECOMMENDATION: The City Council (Council) is requested to receive and file actions of the Public Arts Commission (Commission) from their meeting of August 22 , 2013 . BACKGROUND: On August 22, 2013, the Commission reviewed preliminary design concepts of Rosemead Boulevard public art installations including four tile mural seating walls , two scu lptures and 24 art pavers. Refinements were provided to Rosemead Boulevard public artists for preparation of their final design concepts, which will be presented to the Council on October 15, 2013. ANALYSIS: The following is a summary of actions taken at the August 22 , 2013 special Public Arts Commission meeting: 1 . NEW BUSINESS A. REFINEMENT OF ROSEMEAD BOULEVARD PUBLIC ART DESIGN CONCEPTS The Commission recommended that artist Daniel Stern better articulate the "Red Car" theme in each sculpture, as well as resolve all public safety and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliances. The Commission also recommended that artist Carole Choucair Oueijan base tile mural seating wall designs on single images to allow for artwork completion :within the· Rosemead Project construction timeline. Lastly, the Commission requested that artist Robin Brailsford provide 24 unique designs for art pavers, and a new text art concept. B. DISCUSSION OF ROSEMEAD BOUELVARD ARTWALK CONCEPT The Commission agreed to explore the possibility of integrating Rosemead Project directories with the new art paver narrative to weave together a cohesive art walk theme. 3. COMMUNICATIONS Vice-Chair Ho announced the artists' presentation of preliminary design concepts to the City Council at their regular meeting of September 3, 2013, at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. He also announced the mandatory Brown Act training for all City Commissions on August 29, 2013 at 7 p.m.; and cancellation of the regular Public Arts Commission meeting of September 4, 2013. 4. REPORTS FROM CITY STAFF Assistant to the City Manager Haworth reported a tentative $6.9 million grant for the Las Tunas Project from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He explained that the Public Arts Commission would be involved early in the process to strategize integration of public art into the project. 5. ADJOURNMENT The Public Arts Commission meeting was adjourned at 7:44 p.m. CONCLUSION: The City Council is requested to receive and file this report.
