HomeMy Public PortalAbout96-096 RESOLUTION NO. 96-096 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON URGING THE UNITED STATES ATTORNEY GENERAL TO IMMEDIATELY CONDUCT A THOROUGH AND INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGATIONS CONNECTING THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY WITH COVERT ILLEGAL DRUG SALES IN THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY WHEREAS, recently published articles in the San Jose Mercury News alleges that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has been involved in covert activities that have proliferated drug sales in the black neighborhoods of Los Angeles; and WHEREAS, the articles further assert that the proceeds of said drug sales were used to fund and support the Nicaragua Contras in direct contravention of legislative directives from the United States Congress; and WHEREAS, the affliction of drug use and related criminal activities have substantially impacted a generation of African Americans; and WHEREAS, the sale of cocaine in Los Angeles and other communities has resulted in human devastation, substantial increases in violent crimes, destruction of families and death; and WHEREAS, the smuggling, transportation and sale of cocaine or any other illegal drug undermines the health, safety and well-being of all American Citizens and WHEREAS, the future of our communities has been greatly threatened by the enormity of drug use and addiction. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Carson does hereby resolve as follows: Section 1. That the City Council urge the United States Attorney General to immediately conduct a thorough and independent investigation into allegations connecting the Central Intelligence Agency with covert illegal drug sales in the Los Angeles and other inner city communities over the past decade. 1 Section 2. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to President Bill Clinton. Section 3. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Attorney General Janet Reno. Section 4. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to John M. Deutsch, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Section 5. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Louis J. Freeh, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Section 6. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the House of Representatives. Section 7. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Rep. Richard Gephardt, House of Representatives Minority Leader. Section 8. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Rep. Benjamin Gilman, House of Representatives Chairman International Relations Committee. Section 9. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Rep. Floyd Spence, House of Representatives Chairman on National Security. Section 10. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Henry J. Hyde, House of Representatives Chairman on the Judiciary. Section 11. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Rep. Larry Combest, Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Section 12. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Trent Lott, United States Senate Majority Leader. Section 13 That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Sen. Orin Hatch, Chairman Senate Judiciary Committee. Section 14. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Sen. Arlen Specter, Chairman Senate Intelligence Committee Section 16. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to U. S. Senator Barbara Boxer. Section 17. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to U. S. Senator Dianne Feinstein. Section 18. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald. Section 19. That a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Congresswoman Maxine Waters. PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTED THIS 22nd day of October 1996.
