The regylar meeting of Council was held to -day at 4:00 p.m. and was attended by Mayor Bright, who presided, and Councilmen Cann, iogan, Lovell, tharpiey, Blumenthal an_t Righton. Also Messrs. : .F.Broderick,jr., A.P.Solomon,jr., and Terry Bryan. The minutes of the meeting of February 1, 1935 were read and approved. Mr. Broderick appeared before the Board and protested against Mr. Bryan, Bupt of Public Works.of the Town, engaging in private work in competition with other contractors, and also against fir. Bryan who is the Building Inspector, passing on his own work. Mr. Broderick was wxcused. Mr. A.Perry Solomon appeared before the Board and .protested against r.r. Bryan engaging in private work in cod petition with him when he tsar. Bryan) is employed by the Town, also that Mr. Bryan was using Town equipment in carrying on his private work. Mr. Solomon also called attention to buildings being erected in violation of the building code, as reggrds space required between buildings, several buildings recently having been constructed of wood and built within r_; two feet of the property line, Mr. Solomon stated that this would cause insurance rates to ble materially increased. Mr. Solomon was el;cused. ir. Bryan then appeared before the Board and was asked if he engaged in private work, he stated that he was not engaged in contracting work, that Bar. M.W.Lippett had requested him to put on a new roof on his cottage and that he had had Acn Thomas and another party do the work, Councilman Righton stated that there had been sang criticism of Mr. Bryan as Building Inspector as he was permitting some people to violate the code and others he required to live up to it. He also asked Mr. Bryan if he was looking after the Towns' trucks to see that they were properly cared for, Mr. Bryan stated that he did. goun ilman : Righton them= d. intructed Mr. Brogan to make an inventory of all of the town's equipment and send it to the Town Clerk. Mr. Bryan was then excused. The Mayor requested the opinion of Council as to whether Mr. Bryan should be permitted to enggge in private work or not. Councilman .uog- an stated that if Mr. Bryan could not enage in private work that his salary should be increased, Councilman Sharpley stated that it should be restored to its original figure and made a motion that this be done, Councilman Logan seconded same, but at this point the Mayor called attention that there were also other employees of the Town whom had their salaries cut and requested that nothing be done at this time but to wait until the new fiscal year when all employees would be given consideration for salary increases, Councilman Sharpley's motion was withdrawn, heā€¢then made a m tion that Mr. Bryan should not engage in any contracting or otheryto Land that his salary increase will be left to the discretion of the Finance Committee, Councilman Logan, seconded same and the motion passed. ' Council was informed that the work of filling in the area behind the bulkhead between 17th and 18th streets would require about four more days. 155 A. Perry Solomon,jr., was appointed Chief of the Savannah Beach, Tybee Island Fire Department and Mitchell Young was appointed Captain of said department on motion made by Councilman Logan, seconded by Councilman Lovell and passed. There being no further business Council adjourned subject to the call of the May Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Ga. April, 12th, 1935. A special meeting of Council was held to -day at 4 :00 p.m. and wasattended by Mayor Bright, who presided, and Councilmen Cann, Logan, Lovell,Righton, Sharpley and Blumenthal, and Town Attor- ney Mcintire. Also Messrs. H.D.Siem, representing the H.P.Smart Estate; Colonel G.A. Gordon; E.F.Broderick, representing Mr. W.J.Flood; Mr. Mallasham, representing Est. A.B.Palmer, and Mr. A.C.Carter, S.N.Harris and Mrs. R.L..Cooper. Messrs. Siem, Gordon, Mallasham and Broderick appeared individ- ually before the Board and petitioned for reduction in their taxes, each was heard and excused with the advice that Council would consider the matter and advise them the result of its find- ings. .r. A.C.Carter appeared and petitioned that he be permitted to purchase a strip of land adjacent to his holdings at Laz- aretto Creek. tie was informed that he would be advised of the action of Council. S.N.Harris and Mrs. R.L.Cooper appeared and informed Coun- cil that they were, representing a group of property owners who were interested in knowing whether the Town was making an effort to get some of the federal funds that would soon be available, to carry on some much needed work at Tybee, and particularly beach protection. Mr. Harris also called attention the need of putting in some beach protection at i'ybee Inlet, also the ppening of the alley number 1, to the river for the use of the public. The committee was informed that a committeee of eounc:l was in touch with Washington relative to this and that it was expected that the Mayor would be in Washington shortly to see if Tybee could derive any benefits. The question as to whether one story, one room buildings should be permitted to be built was discussed, but no action was taken. complaint having been filed that Mr. Sam Blumenthal had built closer to the property line than that allowed by the building ordinance, on several brick bungalows, on his lot on Chatham Avenue.
