HomeMy Public PortalAbout02-028 i i `SON, O� O unrt, CITY OF CARSON CITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION NO. 02-028 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON, CALIFORNIA, IN SUPPORT OF COUNTY MEASURE C — PROPOSED CHARTER AMENDMENT, �. SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT RESTRUCTURING. i. WHEREAS, the City of Carson fully supports the efforts of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to reorganize and improve law enforcement services throughout the County of Los Angeles; and I WHEREAS, Proposition C will be placed on the March 5, 2002 ballot amending the County Charter to increase the number of Assistant Sheriff's from 2 to 3 and increase the number of Division Chiefs from 8 to 12; and i WHEREAS, the City of Carson recognizes the County's need to improve services with the hiring of civilians from outside the Department for the Assistant Sheriff's positions who have special skills and experience in systems and technology that are currently not available to the Sheriff's Department; and WHEREAS, the City of Carson acknowledges the tremendous contributions to public safety and the sense of well-being within this community as a result of the outstanding services demonstrated by uniformed and civilian personnel assigned to the Carson Sheriff's Station; and i= WHEREAS, the City of Carson recognized that the population within the j County of Los Angeles has4ncreased from 5.8 million to 9.8 million in the last 30 1. years, which has increased demand for law enforcement services throughout the County; and s WHEREAS, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department currently serves 41 contract cities and employs nearly 16,000 deputies and operates 10 jail facilities housing over 20,000 inmates; and WHEREAS, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department operates 23 patrol facilities throughout the county serves as the primary police force for all the unincorporated areas within the County of Los Angeles; and ------- ---- WHEREAS, Proposition C as presented, will have no direct cost associated with the hiring of new positions as they will be allocated within existing resources; and WHEREAS, Proposition C will be instrumental in continuing the efforts of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to move forward and meet the new challenges and, methods of improving public safety such as homeland security, community oriented policing, and the effective elimination of waste. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON DOES HEREBY AFFIRM ITS SUPPORT FOR COUNTY MEASURE C — PROPOSED CHARTER AMENDMENT, SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT RESTRUCTURING.
