August 14th, 1935.
A special meeting of Council was held to -day at 12:00, and was
attended by Mayor Bright, who presided, and Councilmen Cann,
Logan, Blumenthal and Righton, and by Mayor Gamble, essrs.
Perry Brannan and E.J.Hgar, J.A.Taylor and A.P.Solomonsmjr.
Mr. Haar presented a petition of Mr. Taylor requesting transfer
of license to sell intoxicating liquors from his place of bus-
iness where he is now located on Butler Avenue to his proposed
new location at the south - eastern corner of Butler Avenue and
First Street..
Mayor Gamble presented a petition signed by Numerous property
- o -wners in the vicinity protesting against the issuance of a
new license or the transfering of the old one contending that
the place conducted by Mr. Taylor is a nuisance and should not
be permitted to operate. Mayor Gamble asked to be excused due
to his having a previous engagment, hh requested that he be
given the privilege of employing; counsel to protect the property
owners in4erests in this section.
Mr., Haar stated that to refuse to grant Mt. Taylor's petition
would be discrimatory and that Town has no authority to . refuse
the issuance of a license to him. Mr Haar was excused.
After some discussion of the matter it was moved and seconded
and' passed that the petition of Mr. J.A.Tay3or requesting the
transfering of his lixcenses be refused, and elso tgat a
wrf'.tten opinion be given by the Town Attorney as to the rights
of Council in connection with the granting or refusing,.a license
for,, this kind of business,- also that the Police Committee go
into the matter thoroughly and ascertain if business is properly
conducted.
Council was informed that Messrs E.F.Broderick,jr and S.N.Harris
requested the privilege of appearing before a later meeting in
connection with their petitions relative to the issuance of
passes in the parking areas. Permission was granted.
The Trades and Labor Assembly requested that thg�iven a do-
• nation to help defray the expenses of their annual Labor Day
celebration at Savannah Beach. On motion made and seconded and
passed that $'50.00 be paid to them the Treasurer was instructed
pay this amount.
There being no further business Council adjou_ned subject to
the call of t.: Mayor.
