A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARSON,CALIFORNIA,
IN SUPPORT OF THE CALIFORNIA ARTS COUNCIL
WHEREAS, The California Arts Council is working for a broad public understanding of,
and appreciation of the non-profit arts and culture in California, for the positive impact the arts play
in enriching cultural, economic, and intellectual life in our communities and school, as an industry
and vibrant economic engine, generates $5.4 billion to the state's economy, creates 161,400 jobs
and contributes $300 million in state and local tax revenues; and
WHEREAS,the California Arts Council has been cut 94%, and the result of these cut will
be that all grant programs will be suspended for 850,000 K-12 students;
WHEREAS, cultural tourists account for one out of every four dollars spent and they tend
to be larger day spenders than any other kind of tourists and those expenditures are key to regional
economic development, drawing income into local economies; and theaters/cultural centers and
their programming draw citizens downtown, often manifest themselves as architectural definitions
of community identity, serve as homes to local performing arts companies, provide much-sough-
after cultural services (especially for children), and are elements of civic pride and a wise
community investment; and
WHEREAS, cities that are centers of creativity are where industries and businesses want
to locate; and
WHEREAS, Public Art enhances the quality of life by helping to define and formulate
responses to social, economic,cultural and political issues faced by a community; and
WHEREAS, participation in the Arts offers safe, engaging and constructive environments
for young people who lack adult supervision during non-school hours, a time when they are most
vulnerable to community violence and gang recruitment; and
WHEREAS, the Arts build cultural bridges, contribute toward cross-cultural
understanding, strengthen the association between identity and citizenship, and enhance the quality
of life; and
WHEREAS, the diversity of California merits increased efforts to bring people together to
celebrate, educate each other, and preserve the traditions and contributions of its citizens, and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Carson fully
support the mission of the California Arts Council and their movement to re-establish funding of
this state agency at a level on a par with the top tier of other states to reflect its value to the citizens
and communities of the state of California.
