Tom Tucker
Merrill Saleen
John Wolf
AIRPORT ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MINUTES
AUGUST 4, 1993
Kim Allen
Bud Schmidt
II. REQUEST FOR DELAY OF PAVING, OLD HANGARS: +++++++++
The letter from Boyd Miller representing the owners was
considered. Given that substantial savings would occur, Tucker
moved to recommend to the City Council to extend the deadline to
September 30, 1994 for paving in front of the hangars and, if
this deadline was not met, to declare the leases violated and
revoke the leases. Saleen seconded and the motion carried.
III. AIRPORT NAME:
The Committee considered the further letters regarding the
naming of the airport. There was discussion of the confusion
that results from the naming of a field after an individual.
After further discussion, Wolf moved to recommend to the City
Council that:
1) Due to the difficulty and danger to airmen arising from
locating a field from a government directory that would arise in
an emergency, the naming of a field other than by the city in
which it is located, represents a unwarranted risk to life and
safety and the name of field should remain "McCall Municipal
Airport"
2) In the event that a terminal is built at the field in
the future, a name honoring a local aviation hero such as Penn
Storr, Bob Fogg, Jim Townley or John Wolf, could be attached to
such facility.
IV. LOCAL MATCH, 1994 AIP
The Committee wished the Council to know that it would be
pleased to discuss the proposed 1994 City Airport Levy for the
local match for the 1994 FAA sponsored project at the Council's
convenience during their budget deliberations.
V. STATUS REPORTS:
Kim Allen reported that the aircraft counter is in place and
operating as of this date. Analysis of the tapes may be beyond
the scope of the contract.
The staff reported that the taxiways were mowed, some potholes
repaired, and avionics were all operating.
The USFS will be developing an easement to provide access on
the west side taxiway and conclude the dedication of the water
and sewer lines from the jump base construction.
VI. ADJOURNMENT:
Without further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
J hn Wolf

In securing a bid for the paving in front of the old hangars, we have been advised that by
waiting until the contract is let for the airport paving project next year we would be able
to save a considerable amount of money. Therefore, we would like to request approval
from the airport committee to delay until next year the paving project for our hangars.
Thank you for your consideration.

Dear Administrator Schmidt:
Re: Your Ltr. 5-17-93 and Airport Advisory Committee Minutes
5-5-93, relating to re -naming the McCall Airport.
I had hoped to meet you at the Smokejumper Anniversary. It did
not occur and I did not wish to infringe on your weekend. I
continued vacationing therefore I apologize for this tardy re-
sponse.
At the Reunion, a number of us (pilots, smokejumpers, Forest
officials, business men and prominent individuals) met and
discussed the recommendation that the City of McCall re -name
the airport in honor of W. Penn Stohr. The consensus of the
group was that we are desirous to see the effort succeed.
In this respect, we are prepared to offer the Airport Advisory
Committee any additional information, for their consideration,
that will assure a positive action on their part. In addition
to the voluminous historic record of W. Penn Stohr and his con-
tribution to McCall and Idaho aviation, we can, if necessary
furnish testimony and/or letters of endorsement for the pro-
posal, from outstanding Idaho aviation and natural resources
people
Would you please reply to the following inquiry:
1. What additional support can we give the
Committee to assist in arriving at a
positive decision?
2. What is the deadline date for the Committee
to make its evaluation?
3. Can we, at this time, believe that our
proposal is being given full and proper
recognition of its merit?

Dear Representative Wilde:
I appreciated our brief meeting, on Sunday morning, at the
Smokejumper Anniversary.
A group of present and retired pilots, smokejumpers, prom-
inent individuals and others have recommended to the City
of McCall that the McCall Airport be designated as the W.
Penn Stohr Airport. W. Penn Stohr, the Idaho Miracle Pilot,
is renown for his early days (1930's - 1940's) back -country
flying and heroic exploits. It is the Group's opinion that
he alone gave McCall and the State of Idaho its respected
place in aviation history. We believe it is time that proper
recognition of Johnson Flying Service and W. Penn Stohr be
honored.
Enclosed find prior correspondence that is self-explanatory.
We solicit your support and ask that you intervene in our
behalf with the McCall Aviation Advisary Committee. The
issue has merit and we feel that the support of you and other
individuals will result in a positive decision on the Commit-
tee's part.
We, as a group, will assist in any way possible. May we have
a response from you.
Recently, we understood that Cascade, Idaho has an interest
in renaming their airport. If correct, we would prefer that
McCall take the lead role first. W. Penn Stohr's relation-
ship with the U.S. Forest Service and Smokejumping makes it
a logical step.

Mr. Arthur J. Schmidt, Chairman

City of McCall

Dear Mr. Schmidt,
My name is Bill Moody, former Base Manager of the North Cascades
Smokejumper Base in Washington State. After 33 years as a
smokejumper/Base Manager I retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 1989.
I have long been a "student" of smokejumper and "backcountry aviation
pioneers." Among those pioneers who contributed to this history and who
risked his life in heroic rescue missions was W. Penn Stohr.
At this time when you are considering a name change for McCall Airport I
strongly urge you to consider renaming the airport in honor of this local
aviation hero and pioneer -W. Penn Stohr.
This would be a well deserved tribute to a "backcountry aviation pioneer"
and to his son Penn Stohr Jr.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
William D. Moody

Dear Bill,
The McCall City Council has directed me, upon recommendation of
the McCall Airport Advisory Committee, to request that the City
be listed as an interested recipient of certain property which
may be useful to our airport.
With an eye toward the closing of air bases, the following
equipment would be of use to us:
1. A large rotary snowblower, self propelled
2. Sections of jet blast fencing
3. A portable control tower, truck mounted
4. ARFF equipment, especially P-19 type units
5. A semi trailer (no tractor requested) or construction
office type trailer)
Please hold these requests open for us and identify us on the
list of interested parties for any such equipment. We do not
anticipate purchase independently if the items are not
immediately available.
Your continuing interest in the City and its airport is greatly
appreciated.
Sincerely,
Arthu J. Schmidt,
