5. On May 15, 2012, Relay for Life Community Representatives gave a presentation
at the City Council meeting regarding the work and mission of the American
Cancer Society and requested Council to consider co-sponsorship of their
upcoming Relay for Life of Temple City at the Temple City High School on July 28-
29, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 1 0:00 a.m., a 24 hour event.
ANALYSIS:
The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health
organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem through
research, education, advocacy, and service . Relay for Life is an overnight event
designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs for the
American Cancer Society
Over the past three years , the City has developed a strong relationship with the
American Cancer Society by co-sponsoring the first three Relays for Life in the City of
Temple City. {i.e ., The Southern California Chinese Relay for Life at Temple City High
School on June 26-27, 2010, The Relay for Life of the Chinese Community South at
Live Oak Park on April 16-17, 2011 and again on April 14-15, 20 12)
The American Cancer Society is once again requesting the City to co -sponsor the
Relay for Life of Temple City by providing the following assistance:
• Use of the City's stage
The event organizer is requesting to use the stage from Live Oak Park. This
request would require the stage to be transported from Live Oak Park to the high
school in separate pieces as we currently do not have a trailer large enough to
transport the entire unit and would require set up by at least two Parks &
Recreation staff. Setting up the stage on grass may be difficult as the stage is not
on wheels or rollers. There is also the issue of storage of the stage at Temple
City High School during Friday and Sunday night. Due to these reasons, Staff is
recommending the event organizer rent a stage, as they did in the past Relay for
Life events at Live Oak Park .
• Tables at City Concerts in the Park
The event organizer is requesting two tables at the City's Concerts in the Park
prior to the event to promote the relay and for Cancer Survivor appreciation .
• Meeting Room Space
The event organizer is asking the City to use the City Hall Community Room to
City Council

conduct organizational meetings on June 28, July 12 and July 26 from 6-9 p.m.
The Community Room is available pending the City Council's decision . Applicable
room reservation fees and deposits would be waived by the City.
• City's Cable TV Channel to Promote the Relay for Life .
The American Cancer Society is asking the City to run public service
announcements promoting the Relay for Life on the Temple City Government
Information Channel , which is allowed for local non-profit organizations.
• Temple City Youth Committee Involvement
The event organizer is asking for possible involvement by the City 's Youth
Committee. This may be difficult as the current committee members terms end
before the Relay for Life event on July 28-29, 2012 .
• Mayor and City Council Involvement
The event organizer would like the Mayor and City Council to speak at the opening
ceremony on July 28 , 2012, as their schedules may permit.
CONCLUSION:
The American Cancer Society has requested the City to consider co-sponsoring for the
Relay for Life of Temple City at Temple City High School on July 28-29, 2012 , from 10
a .m. to 10 a .m., a 24 hour event. Council's approval is required to waive any and all
fees and deposits for use of the City Hall Community Room and for assistance in
publicizing the event.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Approval of this item would have a minimal impact on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2011-12 or
the FY2012-13 City Budget. If the stage needs to be transported during the weekend ,
the City would incur overtime cost for a minimum of two Parks & Recreation staff. If the
fees and deposit were wa ived by the City Council for the Relay for Life , the City would
not have a deposit on file if the City Hall Community Room was damaged which could
result in an adverse impact to the budget.

~ Dear Honorable Vincent Yu, City Council and City Manager,
On behalf of the American Cancer Society, California Division, I want to thank you for this
opportunity to share with you information about a new upcoming Relay For Life of Temple City . As
you know Relay is not new to Temple City as the Chinese Relay For Life has been held at Live Oak
Park for the past several years. This is a new, community Relay for your residents and youth of
Temple City, CA. This event will be held at Temple City High School on July 28-29, 2012.
For those that do not know about this unique event, Relay For life is a 24-hour event that
represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, those who face cancer will be
supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. Day and night teams of families, friends, co-
workers and businesses come together to raise awareness and fundraise for cancer research and
programs . Survivors triumphantly walk the first lap and the Relay continues! In the evening a
memorable Luminaria Ceremony honors those Survivors and lets us remember loved ones lost. We
have a volunteer committee working to provide entertainment and educational activities to engage
participants throughout the night.
This disease has touched many of us in some way and I seem to meet residents of Temple City
during every visit who have been personally affected and want to be involved in the fight against
cancer. Three Survivors currently sit on the committee rallying to find a cure! Relay For Life brings
people together to raise money to help prevent cancer, save lives and diminish suffering from the
disease. For me, it was the loss of my father in 1997 followed by a breast cancer diagnosis of my
best friend in 2007. Her early detection, supported by initiatives of the American Cancer Society,
led to successful treatment.
The Society is a volunteer-based organization and we are very conscious of how the constituent's
dollars are spent. For every dollar donated $.94 goes to fund ground-breaking research and free
patient services right in your community. With that, we are asking that the City of Temple City Co -
Sponsor the Relay For Life of Temple City. With the support of the City we know we can make
greater strides in engaging residents and local businesses to get involved in the fight against cancer
and raising awareness of healthy living and early cancer screenings.
By doing so, you would be investing your time in the only voluntary cancer control organization that
fights cancer nationally, statewide and locally, that has a comprehensive cancer control plan in
place . Vision 2015 is the American Cancer Society's pledge to reduce cancer mortality by SO%, to
reduce cancer incidence by 25%, and to achieve measurable improvement in the quality of life for
cancer patients and their families by the year 2015. Your support moves us another step closer to
achieving these goals.
I believe the City is truly the core of the community of Temple City and know that our partnership
can only bring the residents and youth together for a successful Relay For life event.
Please feel free to contact me at 213-364-6160 with any questions or to request further
information.
