HomeMy Public PortalAbout19360504CCMeetingSavannah Beach, Tybee Island, a. May 4th, 1936. The regular meeting of Council was held on May 4th, 1936 at 4 :00 P. M,, which was the last meeting of the old Board, and was at- tended by Mayor Bright, who presided, and Councilmen Cann, Logan, Lovell, Sharpley and Righton. The minutes of the meetings of February 7; March 6; March 23rd; April 6th and April 21st were read and approved. Mayor Bright thanked Councilmen for its co- operation and assistance given him during his tenure of office, which had resulted in splendid improvements made in the town during the past two years. Councilmen Cann speaking for the members of the board informed the Mayor that it had been a pleasure to work with him and the re- sults of the splendid co- operation could be plainly seen from the improvements that have been made on the Island during his adminis4ra- tion in office. There being no further business Council adjourned. Immediately after the adjourment of the old Board, which had retired, the newly elected board consisting of Mayor 0, E. Bright and Council- men J. Ferris Cann, Wm. S. Lovell, Wm. G. Logan, H. F. Sharpley, H. Y. Righton and A. P. Solomon Jr., took their seats, then Judge B. B. Heery administered the following oath to 0. E. Bright; I, Orrie E. Bright, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully and honestly perform the duties of Mayor of the Town of Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Ga., to the best of my skill and ability without favor or affection, SO ?ALP ME GOD; 0.E.Bright After which the Mayor called Council to order, Judge Heery then ad- ministered the following oath to the Councilmen: I, J. Judge Heery then retired. It was moved and seconded and passed that Councilman Logan be elected Chairman of Council. It was moved and seconded and passed that Councilman Sharpley be elected Vice - chairman of. Council. It was moved and seconded and passed that the Mayor's salary be fixed at $66.66 per month. It was moved and seconded and passed that the salary of the Clerk of Council andEx-officio Treasurer be fixed at $175.00 per month. On motion made and seconded and passed, Henry M. Buckley was elected Clerk of Council and Ex- officio Treasurer. It was moved and seconded and passed that the salary of the Chief of Police and Ex- officio Tax Collector be fixed at $115. On motion made and seconded and passed A. L. Hildrieth was elected Chief of Police and Ex- officio Tax Collector, It was moved and seconded and passed that the salary of the Superin- tendent of Construction be fixed at $162.00 per month, for the duration of the "W. P. A.* project installing protection work on the beach. It was moved and seconded and passed that W. S. Bryan be appointed Superintendent of Construction. It was moved and seconded and passed that the annual fee to be paid to the Town Attorney be fixed at $250.00. It was ,moved and seconded and passed that F. P. MclnTire be elected Town Attorney. It was moved and seconded and passed that Mr. D. B. McCracken be appointed .electrical Inspector. It was moved and seconded and passed that Dr. L. W. Shaw be appointed Health Officer -. It was moved and seconded and passed that Mitchel R. Young be appointed Chief of the. Fire Department, he to have authority to select the cap- tain of the Fire Department. It was moved and seconded and passed that Tomrny Reed be elected Sani- tary Inspector and also Mechanic to look after the automotive equip- ment of the Town at a salary of $75.00 per month. It was moved and seconded and passed that the Town purchase a new truck of 131 inches wheel base, chassis with cab, dual wheels 600 x 20 6 -ply tires with helper springs and oil bath air cleaner to be used by the Sanitary Department. The clerk was instructed to ask for sealed bids and Councilman Logan was appointed as a committee of one to open bids with authority to purchase. A petition was read from Mr. A. T. Cassels requesting relief for him - self and the residence in the neighborhood of 10th Street between Butler Avenue and the Strand, from the drainage ditch which was opened there last year. It was the opinion of Council that at the present time this ditch was necessary. Mrs. Evelyn M. Baker, Maraer of Hotel Tybee, petitioned that she be permitted to erect several awning covered shelters on the be ch, also th4t the ditch along 15th Street be filled so that cars can be parked in this'area, also that the Town roll the new Tennis Court that she is building. Council agreed to fill up the ditch and to roll the Tennis Court and also allow the erection of the shelters on the beach, provided that the Town would be protected against any possibility of damage suits or otherwise. It was moved and seconded and passed that the motorcycle be re- paired at a cost of approximately $4.0.00. Councilman Logan was appointed as a committee of one to look after this. It was moved and seconded and passed that if two reliable Trusties could be gotten from the Convict Camp to drive the two new $oagw"E` trucks that they be paid 50 cents each per week. A petition from a group of retail grocers stores operating on the Island requesting that any vehicle coming to the Town limits delivering groceries be taxed the same as them was presented. Petition was refused. There being no further business Council adjourned subject to the call of the yor.
