Hillsborough Tree Board
Wednesday, April 20, 2016

Present: Chairman Andrea Lewis, Vice Chairman Frances Harris, George Campbell, Phil Ray, Bryan
Stuart, Liz Waters, Ex Officio – Karen MacAulay, Ex Officio – Greg Yavelak

Item 1: Call meeting to order, roll call, and confirm presence of a quorum
Chairman Lewis called the meeting to order at 9:05 a.m. Ms. Trueblood called the roll and confirmed the
presence of a quorum.
Item 2: Consideration of changes or adjustments to the agenda
Chairman Lewis added an announcement on behalf of the Master Gardeners.
Item 3: Approval of minutes from March 16, 2016
Motion: Vice Chairman Harris moved to approve the March 2016 minutes.
Second: Mr. Ray seconded.
Vote: Unanimous
Changes: no changes
Item 4: Presentation of Forest Management Plan for Kings Highway Park: Chris Hirni, Orange
County Forest Ranger
Mr. Hirni touched on some of the highlights of the forest management plan. He and Ms. Trueblood
reviewed there is an historic roadbed/trading path through this park. The park holds a mixed-age forest.
Most of the stands in North Carolina are mixed age. Ms. Trueblood explained the de-watering basin,
which will be maintained as a meadow. Ms. Trueblood explained the planned floating dock. There was
discussion about the emerald ash borer.
Mr. Hirni reviewed areas where some trees should be removed including in the road bed and near the
parking.
There was discussion about removing invasive species.
Item 5: Riverwalk Tree Identification update: Greg Yavelak and Karen MacAulay
Mr. Yavelak reviewed that they identified 27 different trees including: Sweet Gum, Hickory, Black
Walnut, Black Cherry, Southern Red Oak, River Birch, Magnolia, Red Maple, Beech, White Oak, Sugar
Maple, Redbud, Loblolly Pine, Buckeye, Shagbark Hickory, Persimmon, Sassafras, and Sycamore.
Ms. Trueblood will get information about identification signs. The subcommittee will create a list of 25-
30 trees by the June Tree Board meeting with common and scientific names. The goal is to place an
order for the identification signs by August.

Item 6: Updates/Ongoing Business:
May Last Fridays Planning: English Ivy, Karen MacAulay
The board reviewed plans for the Last Friday’s event. Mr. Yavelak will
transport tables.
Treasure Tree article: Liz Waters
The board chose the historic postcard for picture to go with the article.
Garden Club update: Andrea Lewis
Chairman Lewis announced that the Garden Club is trying to include Girl
Scouts and is applying for a grant. It can be difficult to get Garden Club-
maintained areas weeded.
Staff Updates
There was brief discussion about watering new trees. Ms. Trueblood
asked board members to share with others any information she sends
out about projects that need volunteers (like Eagle Scout projects).
Downtown Sidewalks Project may get put together with the
CMAQ/West Hillsborough project. The loading zone is being constructed
on W. Margaret Lane. The upper and lower Mayo parking lot is being
repaved. The Cherry Laurel by the soccer field in Gold Park has been
eaten by a deer. She asked for help watering five trees at Cates Creek
Park this summer. She explained the stormwater system may be re-
done over the next year and there would then be opportunities for new
plantings. Mr. Campbell volunteered to water at Cates Creek Park. Also,
Classical American Homes is in the process of putting in the bridge and
pathway that will connect to Riverwalk.
Added item: Announcement on behalf of the Master Gardeners
Chairman Lewis announced a Master Gardener plant sale that would be
happening this weekend.
