Members present: Chair Pascale Mittendorf, Vice-Chair Greg Yavelak, Phil Ray, Karen MacAulay, Liz Waters, Andrea Lewis (ex officio) Members absent: Mary Jewell Others present: Ken Hines, Town of Hillsborough representative Stephanie Trueblood, Town of Hillsborough Planning Department The meeting began with Pascale Mittendorf asking members if there were any agenda changes. The Last Friday event in September was added to the agenda. Agenda changes were approved. The revised minutes of the June 20, 2012 meeting were approved by the Board The Tree Board was informed by Ken Hines that a possible merger between the Parks and Recreation Board and Tree Board was no longer being considered. Hines also updated the Board about the request from the Historic District Commission to develop a landscaping plan to present to the HDC before tree removal at the Old Courthouse can occur. Perhaps show what it looks like now and indicate what would be planted. Pascale Mittendorf requested members research site appropriate trees to discuss at the September meeting. Hines stated that Duke Energy had cut down the final trees recommended for removal due to the pruning operation. Stephanie Trueblood and Ken Hines will develop code enforcement language to address pruning by utility companies in the future. Liz Waters stated homeowners need to be educated about planting trees near utility lines. Tree Board members are to bring information about recommended trees to the September meeting. An update was provided by Ken Hines about the condition of the oak tree on Calvin St. Arborists from the NC Department of Forestry believed the tree was stressed from the high temperatures and needed to be watered and possibly pruned. Phil Ray did not recommend the tree be pruned at this time. The next Treasure Tree will be the osage orange tree on Churton St. Andrea Lewis and Phil Ray will write the article for the newspaper. Procedures to disperse the funds from the Tourism Grant to the Tree Board were discussed by Ken Hines. Members will visit the site along Court St. to determine the best tree selection for the area. Recommended landscapers to plant and maintain the trees include Dan Snipes and Rock Solid Landscapes. Under New Business Ken Hines recognized Phil Ray for pruning of the crepe myrtles along East King St. before NCDOT pruned the trees to accommodate street paving equipment. He also pruned trees located near businesses in downtown Hillsborough. 2 A request from a resident on North Hassell St. for the Tree Board to make a recommendation as to whether the Leyland cypress on their property needed to be removed due to the pruning by Duke Energy was discussed. Phil Ray, Greg Yavelak, and Pascale Mittendorf visited the site and concluded the trees would survive and did not need to be removed at this time. At the September 28th Last Friday the Tree Board will set up a display with a tree planting theme. A topic may include planting under utility lines. Details about Last Friday will discussed at the September meeting. Meeting adjourned.
