HomeMy Public PortalAboutResolution No. 195-03 03-25-2003 RESOLUTION NO. 195-03 • A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RICHLAND HILLS, TEXAS, SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE TARRANT COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT TO SAVE EAGLE MOUNTAIN STATE PARK AS A PUBLIC USE RECREATIONAL AREA WHEREAS, The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department bought the 400 acres bordering on Eagle Mountain Lake in Northeast Tarrant County 23 years ago for $3.9 million with the intent of making it a state park; and, WHEREAS, Tarrant County is the third most populous county in the state, but none of Texas' more than 120 state parks is located here, while other urban counties have thousands of acres of state park land; and, WHEREAS, although some critics of the park system have indicated that one of its major failings is a lack of parks in heavily populated areas, no funding was ever approved to develop the Tarrant County property; and, WHEREAS, although the state has indicated that neighbors have opposed development of the park, it is now apparent that neighbors support the development of the park; and, WHEREAS, by a unanimous vote, the Tarrant County Commissioners Court has asked the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to delay any decision on the sale of Eagle Mountain • Lake State Park for 60 days; and, WHEREAS, Tarrant County has also made a commitment to provide up to $1 million in actual and/or in-kind improvements for hiking and biking trails-if the State would retain ownership of the property; and , WHEREAS, if the State is not satisfied with this offer, Tarrant County has invited it to make a counter offer. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Richland Hills City Council, do hereby support the efforts of the Tarrant County Commissioners Court to save Eagle Mountain State Park as a public use recreational area.
