The regular meeting of Council waelhe1d&-16e4day at 4:00 p.m. in Savannah office, and was attended by Mayor Bright, who preseided, and Councilmen Logan, Sharpley, Cann, Solomon, Right= and Lovell and Town Attorney McIntire. The minutes of the meeting of January 7th were read and approved. Mr. J. i.Hennessy as attorney for the Estate of Mrs Jane W. Punk petitioned that the discounts be allowed on taxes due for_aithe years 1931 thru 1937, amounting to $ 414.40, they offering to settle for $ 341.32. It was moved, seconded and passed that the offer be accepted, provided that it is paid within ten days.' There being no further business Council adjourned subject to c 1 of the IL = , or. Cecil Carter. Makowski Yrs. petitioned that the license granted them to do business at 1:'rs. Carter's stand, (First street and First Avenue) be transferred to their new place of business ( First Street and +ourth Avenue). Petition granted. Yrs. Carter petitioned that she be allowed to do business at her place ( First Street and First Avenue) on a pro -rated basis for 1937 from ,March 1st to April 30th,1938. Petition granted. Tate minutes of the meeting of February 4th were read and approved. A committee consisting of Councilmen Sharpley, Lovell and Righton were appointed to investigate the matter of getting a new location with a view of moving the convict camp from the public park. An offer was made by Chas.S.Hatfield to blast the remainder ofthe old wreck on the beach nevi Tybrisa Pavilion for 17.50. It was moved, seconded and passed that the offer be accepted. T report of financial condition of the Town was submitted to Council by The Finance Committee showing the excellent condition of the Town's finances ;as follows; To the /Mayor and Co tnoilmen of Savannah Beach, Tybee Island. Your Finance Comimittee thought it would be of interest to the property ,owners and tax payers of the Town to be informed of the present financial condition of the Town and to knots what has been accomplished during the years from 1929 to date, known as the period of the great depression. WO are rather proud of the record. A In 1929 the Town had a bonded debt of `x132,000.00, and in 1932 owed the banks of Savannah. 11261E73.52,, and also owed some floating indebtedness. Today we owe 4“.000.00 ,,bonded debt and the banes e2100.00 and no floating indebtedness. In other words, we have reduced the bonded debt .e8,000.00, and the bank indebtedness 424,738.52, and of the •, 2 00.00, now due the banks 0.500.00 represents the balance of purchase, money on the new fire engine purchased: last surer for 43000.00, and which we are paying off at the rate of 4150.00 per month. In addition to the reduction of the Town's indebted- ewes as hereinbefore shown we have built and paid , for the boardwalk and parking space between 17th and 18th Streets, ;8012.31 and paid 49915.46 as our share of the erosion protection project of 1.P.A. We have enough cash on hand to carry us through the present fiscal year. It i s true we sold the electric poles and wire equipment for x%21,000.00 which helped us Materially. We have allowed a 20% discount for prompt payment of taxes and last year made a uniform reduction of 2 in land assessment values throughout_the Town. have provided fire protection, which reduced insurance premiums from fifteen to fifty per cent. A special meeting of Council was held to -day at 2:30 p.m., in the office of Mayor Bright, Who presided, and was also attended by Councilmen Cann, Logan, Lovell, Sharpley, Solomon. It was moved, seconded and passed that Mrs. R.L.Curry, W.J.Moore, and Benno P.Hosti be appointed managers to handle the election to be held for Mayor and Six Councilmen of Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, on April 4th, 1938, and that each , .nager be pad $ 5.00 for = erving. 2 -441K f ounci (. W.F.Lingenfelser, a former police officer of the Town, who was injured in Falling off bf a motorcycle, while employed bybthe Town, and w o subsequently had his leg amputated, petitoned that the To, purchase for him an artificial leg. The Mayor and Town Attorney were appointed a committee to look into thertter and ascerta'i'n costs, ect. It was move , seconded and passed that the assessments on land values be reduced 20 per cent, effective May 1,1938. The Matter of moving the fire engine from its present location to another was discussed, but no action was taken, Councilman Solomon was requested to have an inventory made of all the property of the Town used by the Fire Department. It was moved, seconded and passed that the Town purchase a quantity of oyster shell that is available on the island/at not over . 2 cents per bushel, at the pile.
