Hoffmann Brewster Select Board Town of Brewster 2198 Main Street Brewster, MA 02631 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MARCH 20, 2022 New Video of Sea Camps Pond Property Released Monday, March 20, 2023 (Brewster, MA) – The Pond Property Planning Committee (PPPC) is excited to announce the release of its video, “Introducing the Pond Property”. “It is appropriate that the first showing should be to the Brewster Select Board, as it was their foresight and persistence that got us to where we are today,” stated Doug Wilcock, Chair of the Pond Property Planning Committee (PPPC). The Pond Property Planning Committee (PPPC) has met monthly since April 2022, and has been discussing opportunities for future public access to the property. Currently, no formal parking exists at this location. In order to educate the Brewster community about the property while safe and appropriate access is being determined, the PPPC created the aforementioned video, which provides a virtual tour of the beautiful 66-acre parcel from Route 137 to the shores of Long Pond. Those interested can view the video on the Town website at www.brewster-ma.gov. The Brewster Recreation Department, in partnership with Mass Audubon, will be offering kayak tours to the shore of the Pond Property on June 3, 2023 (rain date June 4). Space is limited and registration is required. Please go to the Brewster Recreation Department page for more information. Additional low-impact activities are being planned. Early in 2022, the Brewster Select Board created two new advisory committees, each consisting of 11 Brewster residents with diverse backgrounds. These committees are responsible for identifying existing conditions; developing short-term public access plans; assembling a public engagement strategy to ensure broad community input; identifying and evaluating potential partner organizations; and developing comprehensive plans for Town Meeting consideration. The Town also hired a landscape architecture firm, Reed Hilderbrand, in November 2022 to provide expert support and design guidance to the committees as future uses of the properties are planned. Both the Pond Property and Bay Property Planning Committees look forward to public engagement workshops in Spring 2023. Residents are encouraged to submit comments or questions about the Pond Property to PPPC@brewster-ma.gov and the Bay Property to BPPC@brewster-ma.gov. 1 Donna Kalinick From:Chris Williams <crwilliams1212@gmail.com> Sent:Thursday, March 16, 2023 5:01 PM To:Doug Cc:Cindy Baran; Donna Kalinick Subject:Re: temporary sign: professional design? 'sounds good, Doug, thanks! I do think the easel poster will work for Conservation Day and other events. Hal told me when we met a while back, that's how they did posters for the visioning process at pop-up displays at events around town. The wind could be a factor but we can cope with that. I'd hate to call a meeting just for this so I hope it can be squeezed onto the agenda. I appreciate your support! What you’re proposing sounds just like the ticket and if we get a vote on 3/29 we will be in good shape to have signs ready for the first forum, for town meeting, and for the start of the summer season. Everything you are suggesting here sounds like it will set us up nicely. Will the modified tabletop design be suitable for events like Conservation Day and the like? I will cc Cyndi and Donna so that they are aware that we want this on the agenda for 3/29. If we can’t squeeze it in that day I think we should plan on a meeting mid-April to get that moving. Chris, thank you for all your work on this. You have really carried this project forward. If I can be any help with any aspect of this, please give me a call. Since we're re-doing it anyway, I do not have any problem with this. The cost would be around $250. When I met with Kari on Tuesday, we checked with Donna concerning the budget and there were no issues going this route. If we do, the designer would take our texts, photos, and maps, then add the new catchy title, QR code, town seal, and committee ID, all laid out in an attractive fashion. Then I'd take the design to Staples for printing on vinyl, similar to the first version. > > We also discussed pivoting from the homemade three panel tabletop design for the traveling exhibits to more of a poster of the same design as the temp sign above, on an easel display. This would be easy to create, another Staples printing job, including mounting on foam core. It would also be easier to move around to different venues and not require a table. The town already has easels available. For an example of this type of exhibit, see the BCT map displayed on an easel in town hall outside of the meeting rooms. > > I know we have a busy meeting coming up but I'd like to add this additional discussion to the agenda and get a vote on it so we can proceed in a timely fashion. After the Town bought the former CCSC properties, we established two planning committees to assist with the comprehensive planning process and we hired a consultant, Reed Hilderbrand. RH has been working on discovery and will be providing those reports to the committees in the next few meetings. We will then embark on the community outreach portion of the process to determine future uses. For the pond, when we purchased, we received pledges from MA Audubon and Brewster Conservation Trust with the understanding that a majority of the property, at least 50% would be preserved through a CR. The rest of the property could be used for recreation, housing, and general municipal use. The property is currently not open due to constraints on parking and access which is why the committee decided to do the video. The Bay property has been very visible to the public due to location and the opening of the beach last summer and the pool this summer. One of our committee members is a producer and worked on the video as a volunteer. We also had several other committee members assist as well as some residents who volunteered their time and did drone footage. I will share this email with the volunteer producer, and she can reach out to you directly. Thank you for your interest. Best, Donna Donna J. As a Brewster resident, I loved seeing the details of the property that I’ve heard so much about! And as a member of the land trust/conservation 2 community, it was such a helpful tool to see utilized to explain to the public the reasons for acquisition, the positive effects of maintaining the space as open space, and the patience and persistence needed in the planning process to open to the public. Is it possible for you to share who you worked with to produce the video? We’d love to explore the idea of using similar videos to introduce some of our properties at Barnstable Land Trust. No problem if you aren’t able to disclose. Thanks for all the work you are doing! Very excited for what is to come. Best, Kelsey
