Mr. Smith informed Council that as a movement was on foot to have a summer mansion for the Governor of Georgia at Savannah Beach, and since the Tybee Beach Company, Globe - .Dredging Company and Logan and Paulsen interests have generiously agreed to convey a strip of land in Venetian Terrace on 5th Avenue for the purpose of erecting this building and as he had discussed the matter with numerous prominent Savannahians Who were all heartily in favor of this being done, expecially since the great advantages it would receive by having the Governor spend a part of his time on the Island, also it would be instrumental in bringing other prominent people here who would in turn cause considerable business to be transacted, which in turn would react to the general good of the Island. He suggested that . replica of the Governors' iansion at Milledgeville, Georgia would be the proper type of building to be constructed. Ur. Bergen said that, as the Governor's position demands that the building be in keeping with the dignity of the office, he too, suggested that a replica of the old Governors Mansion in Milledge- ville, Georgia would make an ideal structure. He stated that the docu- ments pretaining to this building were on file in Washington, D.C. and would be available within several days to Trim. Mr. Smith stated that Mr. Mills B. Lane and Mr. W. B. Murphy had agreed to make substantial gifts, in addition to underwriting the project. Mayor McMillan thanked the committee for their cooperation and efforts in the matter and stated that the Town was under obligation to them for the work they had done. Mr. Smith stated that Governor Rivers was delighted with the idea and that he was very fond of Savannah Beach, and he felt that the plan had tremendous possibilities. The building will be a permanent construction and will place a demand for more substantial buildings on the Island. Mr. Nichols stated that, as the Town would be the sponsoring agent, the land must be deeded to the Town and that the site and the building would become the property of the state of Georgia. The commdttee was excused. 1 Mayor McMillan asked Mr. Donald Nichols to state to .Council what he thought of the situation at South End. Mr. Nichols stated that the erosion could be stopped at South End just as it was stopped at the North End. He stated that it would be necessary to do considerable work on the section of the beach that has been damaged, and that the 'o" TPA would be very glad to work with the Town, but that it was necessary that the Town raise the necessary funds required as its portion and that no time should be lost in the matter. He stated that he would write up the project but that the Town would have to raise the funds by July 1. He also stated that Colonel Fowler had a pproved the basic plans he had submitted for beach protection. Mayor McMillan thanked Mr. Nichols for his cooperation, after which Mr. Nichols was excused.
