HomeMy Public PortalAboutORD11292 BILL NO. 89-89 SPONSORED BY COUNCILMAN VEILE ORDINANCE NO. /./Ce 7 2 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, MISSOURI, AMENDING SECTION 11-9 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSON PERTAINING TO FILING DATES FOR MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 11-9 of the Code of the City of Jefferson, Missouri, is hereby repealed. Section 2. A new Section 11-9 which shall read as follows is hereby enacted: sec. 11-9. Filing dates, verification for primary election, and unopposed candidates. (a) The opening filing date after which declarations of candidacy for city offices and petitions for the nomination of an independent candidate may be filed with the city clerk shall be 8:00 a.m. on the thirteenth Tuesday prior to the election. (b) The closing filing date before which declarations of candidacy for city offices and petitions for the nomination of an independent candidate must be filed shall be 5: 00 p.m. on the ninth Tuesday prior -to the election. (c) The city clerk shall check each declaration of candidacy to certify that the declaration of candidacy is lawfully made. Within forty-eight (48) hours after the filing deadline (excluding weekends) the city clerk shall determine whether a city primary is needed. If only one person has filed a declaration of candidacy for a party nomination to any city office, then such person shall be the nominee of that political party to the office declared for, and no primary election shall be required for that candidate. If there are two (2) or more candidates for the nomination to a city office from the same political party, then the names of those candidates shall be placed upon a primary ballot. Section 3 .
