This contract is for more than mowing, watering and trimming. A considerable amount of work is to be devoted to trees and planting beds. This work includes a g : , considerable amount of hand weeding, mulching,fertilizing of beds and trees, pruning fr and insect and disease prevention and control. One goal is, through a season of r; excellent care, to bring the planting beds into the best condition possible. k r: 5; The replacement of plant materials, other than plants damaged or destroyed while 1 '= carrying out these services, is not a part of this work description. b. Protection of Property. During the prosecution of the work, the Contractor shall be responsible for all damage or injury to any property that results from any act, omission, neglect, or misconduct in his execution of the work. Grass Seed. Provide fresh, clean, new-crop seed complying with the tolerance for r purity and germination established by the Official Seed Analysis of North America. " Provide certified seed of the grass species proportions and minimum percentages of purity and germination.. Seed shall be delivered to the site as packaged by the seed vendor with the certificate attached. The certificate shall show botanical and common name,percentage of weight,and percentages of purity, germination and weed seed for each grass seed species. Seed shall contain no noxious weeds. ts, f. Topsoil, Fertilizer and Michigan Peat. - ,..� Topsoil shall be a fertile, natural topsoil typical of the locality. It shall not h' 1. p be too acid or too alkaline and without mixture of subsoil and shall be free of stones, lumps, plants, or their roots, sticks and extraneous matter, and shall v _ ndition. It shall be finely shredded, consist of a y' ninety (90%) percent organic moss peat, be brown in color and suitable for horticulture purposes. Shredded particles shall not exceed 1/4" in diameter. Peat shall be measured in air dry condition, containing not more than thirty- s,. five (35%) percent moisture by weight. Ash content shall not exceed ten (10%) percent. .r } g. Maintenance of Site. The contractor shall remove all clippings, trimmings, and r. pulled weeds from the following areas: X` 1. Lawn Areas A. Mowing. The contractor shall use a mower with a sharp blade set at a height of one and one-half(1 1/2") inches to mow the lawn area. The lawn shall be mowed whenever the grass is two and one half 12 s: 1/2")inches high. In periods of hot,dry weather the mowing height may t"��•°� be increased at the direction of the owner. All grass clippings shall be removed during or immediately after mowing. sj B. Edging of Sidewalks. Grass shall be neatly trimmed along walks and around signs and other obstacles each time the lawn is mowed. The contractor may be permitted to use chemical eradicants to reduce the amount of trimming after consultation with the owner. '; 2. Ground Cover Beds . A. Mulch. Mulch planting beds with bark mulch between ground covers plants;place not less than two (2) inches thick. Maintain this thickness throughout the contract period. Mulch will not be required in those } areas where established ground cover plants are providing total cover �.t of the soil. B. Prune and Train. All pruning of trees and shrubs will be done under the supervision of the owner. Clean sharp tools which have been sterilized prior to doing work shall be used in the project area. Remove all dead wood, suckers and broken branches. ii. Trees. Remove lower branches at the direction of the owner and prune as per B(i) above. C. Juniper Shrubs. i. The junipers in planters on the Adams Street side of the municipal building are to hang over the brick wall. Do not ; prune. ii. The junipers on the alley side of the municipal building shall� be trimmed on a regular basis. Quince in Memorial Area. Prune back rather severely from the benches; maintain a desirable shape as directed by owner. 4. Watering. The Municipal Building underground lawnr�� `: sprinkling system provides approximately ninety percent coverage of the lawn areas around the Municipal Building and may be used by the Contractor.Areas :M1 : r, not covered by the sprinkling system are to be watered with hoses and "?'k$=''' sprinklers. One third of the sprinkler system can be in operation at one time. ;A :x` There is no sprinkler system at the Police Station; outside water hoseAs:,; connections are available. f ' The contractor shall water the landscape plantings and lawn areas at sufficient x� ? intervals and in sufficient amounts to promote the growth and development of the plantings and the lawn. Lawn areas are to receive approximately one (1") inch of water (combined rainfall and artificial watering) each week during the "> growing season. Particular attention must be given to plantings under roof overhangs where natural rain water does not reach the plantings. Watering will be conducted in a manner which does not unnecessarily block entrances and sidewalks, waste water, or spray on glass surfaces. Sprinkling equipment shall not be left on lawn areas between waterings. 5. Removal of Weeds and Litter. All beds, planting pits and the fence between the Police Station parking lot and the Municipal building shall be hand weeded. These areas are to be free of weeds on the first day of each month throughout the duration of this contract. Sucker grown from desirable shrubs shall be >; removed in a manner that does not damage the shrubs. The contractor may use chemicals, mulch or other weed retardant methods to control weed growth under the fence after consultation with the owner. The contractor shall be responsible for the replacement of any plant materials seriously damaged in the weeding process. The contractor shall be responsible for removing litter from the planting beds.
