HomeMy Public PortalAbout200905Newsletter.docWater Usage Statistics Our new automated water meter reading has allowed utility billing to verify a number of statistics. For example, an automated watering system typically consumes 1000 gallons every time activated. As residential rates include only 3000 gallons in the base rate, even running a watering system once per week means you will be paying added fees for all other household use! Leaking faucets and toilets consume 400-600 gallons each day! Even toilets that only need the flapper jiggled have shown variances from 40 to 1400 gallons a day. Although the City will provide a credit if you give appropriate proof of recent, relevant plumbing repairs, it is much more cost effective to make such repairs sooner rather than later! Our billing staff will try to contact you whenever such problems arise. However, there are further savings YOU can make NOW to control your water utility costs. Check typical usage for a family of four in the table below: Daily avg w/conservation Bath 36 5 Teeth brushing 2 0.5 Dishwasher 15 7 Hand washing 2 0.5 Shaving 20 1 Toilet 6 2 Washing car 180 45 Laundry 40 25 Lawn (1 hr) 600 100 901 gallons 186 gallons Month: 27030 5580 Tybee cost: $ 62.97 $ 15.54 The bathing figures involve changing from bath to shower, using water to get wet, turning the shower off, and than using water again to rinse. Turning the water off when not actually using it will cut consumption while cleaning hands and teeth. Using a bowl to shave, you use only 5% of that used by running water. A low-flow toilet results in 2/3 less water use. Using your dishwasher or laundry only with full loads contributes significant savings. Tho’ this study shows 600 gallons per hour to water the lawn, our own figures on Tybee are much higher at 1000 gph! Xeriscaping and deep, infrequent watering can cut your use further. Even so, a family of four probably will still pay accelerated water fees, but over $45 each month can be saved – that’s $540 a year savings to justify a low-use toilet, or other water conserving appliances.
