Twitter is free – all you need is a computer or cell phone! We have also completed set-up of an emergency notification system which will call and/or email every registered citizen, resident, property owner, or employee in case of hurricane or other emergencies. Although we have a listing of all 786- telephone numbers from AT&T, you can also opt-in to the system to be notified on your cell, email, or digital telephone. However, you must use a computer to opt-in. You may receive a test phone call during the coming weeks, and we will provide further information during the month of August on how to register and opt-in to this new notification system. Watch Out for Pedestrians! The tourist season is still under way, and there are many people walking from their cars or rentals to the beach. Georgia State Law requires that you STOP for a pedestrian in a cross walk once they are within one and half lanes of your lane. Essentially, if someone is crossing or trying to cross in a marked sidewalk, you must stop to allow them to cross. It is also illegal to pass a car that is stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume that there is a pedestrian crossing. Also remember that the speed limit on Butler Avenue is 30 MPH from the Curve all the way to Tybrisa. Following the speed limit will help you stop in time at crosswalks, too! Leadership Tybee The City would like to work with community members to groom our future leadership and so applied for and received a grant from the Fanning Institute under its Community Leadership Initiative at the University of Georgia. The primary goals for Leadership Tybee are to create a positive economic force on the island and to encourage and develop a well-informed community. The goals for class participants are to improve leadership skills and knowledge of the community and its major challenges. The class will apply those leadership skills to generate measurable projects and goals to demonstrate their commitment to making Tybee a better place to live and work. Anyone on Tybee can nominate a resident or worker on the island as a potential participant in the program. Nominees will be invited to complete an application form, including a project proposal, for acceptance. Nominations are due at City Hall by August 8th. Applications will then be due from nominees August 15th, with classes set to begin on September 8th. Please find the nomination form included with this month’s bill. 14th Street Drainage Project To reduce drainage problems in the area, a major project is under way requiring coordination with contractors and utilities by DPW to double the capacity of the 14th Street outlet. The first step, clearing away branches and trees, has been completed, and Georgia Power is moving their poles back to make room for the larger drainage system. Other utilities will be moving their service back during the summer, allowing the in-ground drainage work to be scheduled after Labor Day to reduce traffic impact during Tybee’s busy season. Utility Bill Reminder Don’t forget utility bills are due the 20th of each month! Littering Fines Visitors to the beach must keep litter in a container at all times! Loose paper, food or other material that could blow away and create a mess on the beach may subject the responsible party to a $100 fine! Take a litter bag with you to the beach; always place your litter immediately in the bag; drop the bag at one of litter barrels near the beach walkovers. And, thanks! New Head of Planning & Zoning Department Please welcome the new head of Planning & Zoning, Jonathan Lynn, whose first day was July 27th. Jonathan is a native Georgian, who grew up in Macon and attended Georgia Southern University. He comes to us with planning and zoning experience at the regional, state, and local levels. Jonathan will be moving to the area with his wife, Bethany, and their two dogs, Scarlet and Maggie.
