HomeMy Public PortalAboutBrewster School Committee -- 2022-09-14 Minutes MEETING MINUTES of the BREWSTER SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING DATE AND TIME: Wednesday, September 14, 2022 @ 6:30PM f e:_ —Z E6K.._ This meeting took place remotely pursuant to the law signed by Governor Baker on June 16, 2021 —An Act Extending Certain COVID-19 Measures Adopted During the State of Emergency, which includes an extension,until March 31, 2023, of the remote meeting provisions of his March 12, 2020 Executive Order Suspending Certain Provisions of the Open Meeting Law. MEMBER ATTENDANCE: Katie Jacobus, Judi Lech, Casey Mecca, Sarah Sherman NON-MEMBER ATTENDANCE: Robin Millen, Director of Curriculum, Instruction &Assessment; Giovanna Venditti, Director of Finance &Operations; Keith Gauley, Principal Stony Brook Elementary School; Steve Guditus, Principal Eddy Elementary School; Kari Hoffmann, Brewster Select Board Liaison Call to Order& Declaration of a (quorum, Meeting Participation Statement and Recording Statement: Chair Jacobus called the meeting to order at 6:30PM, and read the meeting participation and recording statements. Agenda Changes: There were no agenda changes. Citizens Speak: Chair Jacobus opened the floor to citizen's comment(s)/public participation. There were no citizen comments. PRIORITY BUSINESS: _Chair Report: Chair Jacobus welcomed Principal Steve Guditus to the School Committee meeting, and that going forward, meetings will be the third Thursday of the month, with the upcoming October 20th meeting being a hybrid meeting. Superintendent's Report: The Superintendent Report was included in the Committee packet. Superintendent Clenchy was not in attendance, so Director Robin Millen reported on the Superintendent Report. The Report was an overview of convocation, as well as goals and objectives for the 2022-2023 school year. Principal's Report: Principals Gauley and Guditus reported the Principal's Report to the Committee,which was included in the packet. Both Principals reported an excellent start of the school year, and new staff members at both elementary schools. Principal Gauley noted that the Nauset Integrated Preschool now has full-day preschool classrooms at Stony Brook Elementary. School Consolidation Discussion: The Committee discussed school enrollment numbers, space for programming, the full-day preschool now at Stony Brook, and that PreK-5 population needs to be considered not just K-5 for Brewster. Principal Gauley referenced the one page summary and impact document from previous discussions Brewster School Committee September 14, 2022 11 P a g e around consolidation. The document identified the shortage of available classrooms should consolidation take place at current student enrollment levels. FY22 Final Expenditure Report: Giovanna Venditti reviewed the FY22 Final Expenditure Report for both Stony Brook Elementary and Eddy Elementary Schools. The expenditure report was included in the packet to the Committee. YMCA Annual Lease Aereement: The Committee reviewed the lease agreement which was included in the packet. MOTION: It was moved by Sarah Sherman, seconded by Casey Mecca and voted unanimouslv[4-0} to approve the YMCA Annual Lease Agreement at Ston► Brook Elementary School. Policies—Review for a First Reading: AC—Non-Discrimination: not reviewed at this meeting Policies ACAB (Sexual Harassment) and ILD (Student Submission to Educational Surveys and Research)were reviewed for first reading. FY23 Handbook Review: The Committee were advised of a couple of changes to the Handbook: two Principals now, and the COVID Blueprint was removed from the Handbook. Principal Guditus asked the Committee to consider the title of the Handbook to"Brewster Caregiver/Student Handbook"to adhere to diversity, equity, and belonging. MOTION: It was moved by Judi Lech seconded by Sarah Sherman and voted unanimously 4-0to acce t the handbook as oresented to school committee with name ado ted to "Brewster Careeiver/Student Handbook" Declare Surplus: Principal Guditus reviewed the Eddy Elementary School surplus list that was included in the packet. MOTION: It was moved by Casev Mecca seconded by Sarah Sherman and voted unanimousl 4-0 to declare the surplus. REPORTS &INFORMATION: A. Cape Cod Collaborative: Casey Mecca reported that the Collaborative welcomed new staff and new students this fall. They continue to have staffing issues around bus drivers. B. PTO Liaison: Sarah Sherman reported the PTO sponsored a staff breakfast on August 31St, and held a Popsicles at the Playground(meet and greet) on September 5th. Upcoming events include a Mum Fundraiser with Agway, a December Book Fair, and planning for the next Fun-Run Boosterthon. The PTO would like to see more volunteers and get more parents involved. They are also seeking to reach more community/family members via social media outlets. C. School Council Liaison: Eddy Elementary School: No report. Stony Brook Elementary School: No report. D. Policy Subcommittee: Judi Lech reported that the Subcommittee met on September 12th, and they worked on language around the policy for Use of Electronic Messaging by School Committee Members, Brewster School Committee September 14, 2022 2 1 P a g e as well as the policy for Student Absences and Excuses in response to the additional language required by MASC. The next meeting will be in October. E. Behavioral Health Task Force: Chair Jacobus reported that the Subcommittee met on August 29th. Highlights included an update on the High School from Principal Clark; building a vision of the graduate, toolbox for Social Emotional skills and healthy decision making, and the peer mentor program between the Middle and High Schools. F. Transportation Subcommittee: The Subcommittee met on August 15th, and discussed the use of electric school buses. An application for funding electric school buses and charges stations for the Eastham School District and the Nauset Region has been submitted to the US EPA. It's expected that notification on the application will occur in October. G. Superintendent Evaluation Subcommittee: Judi Lech reported that the Subcommittee met and received a copy of the DESE evaluation, and noted a five-step cycle for the evaluation. A final evaluation will go to Joint School Committee on April 30, 2023. Judi also reported that Superintendent Clenchy would give the Subcommittee a self-assessment by October 11th, for the next meeting on October 12th H.
