Chairman Sobkoviak called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Roll
call was taken. R. Zimmerman, G. Krahn, K. Hummel,
J. Eichelberger and G. Bott were absent.
There being no additions or corrections, Chairman Sobkoviak
declared the minutes of February 4, 1992 approved.
NEW BUSINESS: CASE NO. 337-021192 SSA
REQUEST: A Special Sign Approval permit to construct a
four foot by three foot wall sign in the
central sign district.
LOCATION: 711 West Lockport Street.
APPLICANT: Tom Powers, Owner.
Playin' Thru Golf Shop.
CURRENT ZONING: B-3, Business District.
COMPREHENSIVE PLAN: Existing commercial.
P. Waldock summarized his report as follows:
A photograph of the sign is in your packet, the sign is twelve
square feet in area, it is a four by three sign, constructed of
half inch plywood painted white with green lettering. The sign is
not illuminated, and will not project beyond the building wall.
The sign as proposed meets Village ordinance requirements for wall
mounted signs in the Central Sign District. The sign appears clean
and tasteful. Therefore Staff has no objections to sign approval
as requested. Staff recommends that Special Sign Approval be
granted for Playin' Thru Golf Shop at 711 West Lockport Street.
CHAIRMAN SOBKOVIAK: Is this the site of the old R.K. Interiors or
where?
P. WALDOCK: WJM Business Products.
D. NORRIS: Yes, I had to look it up in the phone book to find out
for sure. This is in the Central Sign District, right? Is that
not synonymous with the historic area. This building isn't very
historic, and neither is the sign. I don't really object to the
sign.

P. WALDOCK: The Central Sign District isn't necessarily attempting
to have a historic appearing sign, perse. Basically what the
ordinance is trying to accomplish, is to make sure the signs aren't
of a style and nature that could be detracting from the downtown
area, mostly by size, design and character.
D. NORRIS: Looking at the building, it doesn't look historic in
character either, so I have no objection to the sign. Although I
feel buildings in this Central Historic District, that if the
building itself looks historical, the sign should.
P. WALDOCK: The building and the sign should be of comparable
character.
After some discussion, it was decided to entertain a motion.
A motion was made by M. Krippel to recommend to the Village Board
to approve the special sign request. Seconded by H. Bayer.
CHAIRMAN SOBKOVIAK: A motion has been made and seconded to
recommend to the Village Board to approve the special sign permit
at 711 West Lockport Street for Playin' Thru Golf.
Roll call vote: M. Krippel, yes; D. Norris, yes; Schempf, yes;
Bayer, yes; Consola, yes; Sobkoviak, yes.
