A special meeting of Council was held to -day at 5 :00 p.m., in the
Town office, and was attended by Mayor Righton, who preseided, and
Councilmen Young, Logan, May, Lovell and Haar. Also Major Wallace
and Mr. S.F.Smith.
The Mayor informed Council that he had requested Ma4or.Wallace
to appear to= daytto ascertain if any understanding exists as to
when the work on � @ach protection project is to be taken over by
the Town, the Mayor stated that there a afgeral parts apparently
unfinished, such as the stopping of the sea-waIl opposite the
norther-side of 14th street, where it ties into the old wooden
bulk -head that continues on the Strand north of the line of 14th
street and runs at right angles into the sand - dunes; the curbing
on the sidewe.&k from 14th to 15th street has not beenPYi place;
the street has not been paved nor has drainage been providedfor;
there are several places in the sea -wall where water seeps put
through small nings in the wall; from 17th to 18th street
the Street has "166en paved; the curb along the sidewalk has not
been completed; the storm sewer has not been finished; Major
Wallace stated that under WPA rules the sponsor is expected to
furnish plans and specifications for the project, that on this
job Mr. Nichols made all plans; that the wooden bulk -head aorth
of 14th street tieing into the concrete sea -wall would not be
replaced with concrete; that abine; ofrthe groynes would be ex-
tended to 300 feet with steel piling at the seaward end; that the
work would be turned over to-,the town as soon as it was finished
in seciions. Major Wallace stAated that he was working up the
cost of a sea -wall running the Iengthiiof the beach to be paid for
by the beach front property owners.
The Mayor informed Council that he had been in conference with
Col. Barton, C.O. of Fort Screven, relative to correctinpi the
disposal of house sewerage from the post,at present it is emptied
into the ocean in from of the reservation, Col. Barton agreed that
the matter should be corrected and ghat he would cooperate.
The Mayor apologized to Major Wallace for the oversight in not
inviting the Major, Miss Sheppersen, and Mr. Nichols to the
opening of the Town Hall.
The Mayor stated that he was very much in favor of reducing
taxes whenever possible and hoped that within the very near
future taxes coijld reduced and equalized.
