ORDINANCE NO. 7142 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, MISSOURI, LEVYING AN OCCUPATIONAL TAX ON ALL PERSONS ENGAGED IN THE BUSINESS OF WRITING, SELLING OR SOLICITING, IN ANY MANNER WHATSOEVER THE SALE OF, INSURANCE OF ANY KIND OR DESCRIPTION WITHIN THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, MISSOURI, PRESCRIBING THE TIME OF PAYMENT AND THE AMOUNT OF SAID TAX, PROVIDING FOR THE ISSUANCE OF A LICENSE AND A PENALTY FOR VIOLATION OF SAID ORDINANCE, AND REPEALING SECTIONS 585 - 588 OF THE REVISED ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, MISSOURI, 1956 WHICH PROVIDED FOR THE LEVY OF A LICENSE TAX ON ALL INSURANCE COMPANIES ENGAGED IN BUSINESS WITHIN THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, MISSOURI. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Repeal Clause. Sections 585, 586, 587 and 588 of the Revised Ordinances of the City of Jefferson, Missouri, 1956, levying a license tax on all insurance companies engaged in business within the City of Jefferson, Missouri, be, and the same are hereby, repealed. Section 2. Tax Declared Occupational Tax. The license tax hereinafter levied and assessed under the terms and provisions of this ordinance is declared to be an Occupational Tax for the privilege and right to do business within the City of Jefferson City, Missouri. Section 3. Unlawful to do business without a license. It ® is hereby declared to be unlawful for any person within the City of Jefferson, Missouri, to engage in the business of writing, selling or soliciting the sale of, in any manner whatsoever, insurance of any kind or description, as an insurance agent or broker, whether such person is self employed or employed by some person, firm or corporation engaged in said business directly or indirectly, unless such person has first obtained a license from the City of Jefferson, Missouri, to engage in such business within said • city. Section 4. License, amount of, payable when. On or before the lot day of February of each year, beginning with the year 1962, every person engaged in the business described above shall pay to the City Collector of the City of Jefferson, Missouri, the sum of Twenty ($20.00) Dollars as a tax to obtain a license to engage in said business within said City between the 1st day of January and the 31st day of December of the year in which tax is paid. Any person initially engaging in said business after the 1st day of July in any year, beginning in the year 1962, shall pay the sum of Ten ($10.00) Dollars as a Tax to obtain a license to engage in said business within said city until the 31st day of December of said year. Section 5. License, issuance, fee, contents. Upon payment of the tax mentioned above, the City Collector shall issue a license, in such form as may be provided by said city, signed by the Mayor and the City Clerk, countersigned by the Collector, and attested by the seal of the city, to the person paying such tax upon the additional payment of the sum of Fifty (50p) Cents to defray the cost of preparing said license. Said license shall designate the person by name to whom such license is issued, the period of time for which issued, and the amount paid therefor. ® Section 6. License not transferrable; refunds prohibited. No license issued under the terms of this ordinance shall be assigned or transferred to any other person. No refund shall be made to the holder of any license issued under this ordinance. Section 7. Penalty Clause. Any person violating any of the provisions of this ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a mis- demeanor, and upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by a fine of not less than Twenty Five ($25.00) Dollars nor more than One Hundred ($100.00) Dollars, and each day of violation shall be deemed a separate and distinct offense. .:j Section 8.
