HomeMy Public PortalAboutORD07279 r ORDINANCE NO. 7279 AN ORDINANCE REPEALING ORDINANCE NUMBER 6152 AND SECTIONS 20-28 OF ORDINANCE NUMBER 6000 (BEING SECTIONS 430-439 REVISED ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, 1956) RELATING TO THE TRAFFIC DIVISION OF THE JEFFERSON CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT AND ENACTING A NEW ORDINANCE PERTAINING TO THE SAME SUBJECT. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Ordinance Number 6152 and Sections 20-28 of Ordinance Number 6000 (being Sections 430-439 of the Revised Ordinances of the City of Jefferson, 1956) relating to the Traffic Division of the Jefferson City Police Department be, and the same are hereby, repealed. Section 2. Traffic Division. There is hereby established a traffic division within the police department of the City. Section 3. Personnel. The traffic division shall consist of a traffic lieutenant, a traffic sergeant and eight regular traffic officers. Section 4. Qualifications. No person shall be a member of the traffic division who is not able-bodied and sober and who is not a qualified voter of this city and a resident thereof for at least one year preceding appointment to the traffic division. Section 5. ApMintment and Term. All members of the ® traffic division shall be appointed by the City Marshall, with the consent of a majority of the members of the City Council, for a period of not to exceed one year; provided that the City Marshall may remove any traffic officer with the approval of at least two-thirds of all members of the City Council; all members of the traffic division shall be appointed at or before the second regular council meeting following each annual general city election. Section 6. Oath of office. Before entering upon the discharge of their duties, each member of the traffic division shall take and subscribe to an oath as is required by the charter of the city for city officers. Section 7. Uniform and badge. Each member of the traffic division shall wear a uniform and badge to be prescribed by the 1 M/ City Marshall to indicate their rank and position. The city clerk shall furnish the badge and each member shall furnish his own uniform. Section 8. Eight Hour. Day. Each member of the traffic dividon shall work eight hours per day except in event of an emergency. The City Marshall may assign the hours of duty of each member of the traffic division. Section 9. ,Traffic Lieutenant. The City Marshall shall designate one member of the division as a traffic lieutenant, with the consent of a majority of the members of the City Council, and the traffic lieutenant shall supervise the operation of the division and insure that all members of the traffic division observe and obey all orders of the City Marshall relating to the regulation of traffic. Section 10. Traffic Sergeant. The City Marshall shall also designate one member of the division as a traffic sergeant, with the approval and consent of the Council. The traffic sergeant shall aid and assist the traffic lieutenant in the operation of the traffic division and shall carry out all orders of the traffic lieutenant and City Marshall relating to the regulation of traffic. Section 11. Duties. It shall be the duty of every member of the traffic division to enforce all traffic and other ordinances of the city and to arrest persons observed violating ordinances of the city. All members of the traffic division shall perform such other duties as may be prescribed by the City Marshall from time to time. Section 12. Effective Date.
