HomeMy Public PortalAbout19391127SCMeeting10 A special meeting of C unci�; Chamber, in the City HA11 ir, by Mayor Rtghton, who presic Logan, Young, Haar and Town Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Ga, November 27th, 1939. was held to -day in the Council Savannah, Ga., and was attended ed, and Councilmen Slotin, Lovell, Attorney Dutton, and the following A.A.Lawrence, E.H.Abrahams, H.P.Smart,Tarl Espy, J.J.Rauers, C.G.Dey, Thomas Oxnard, W.W.Sprague, B.O.Sprague, C.W.McCall, A.C.Resd, A.B.Lovett, W.H.Righton, E.S.Stoddarl, Dr. Walter Norton, O.B.Strong, J.G.Stovsll,Elliott W. Reed, and others. Also Donald G.Nichols and Major H.U.Wallace. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways and means for providing for a WPA project to extend the present sea -wall on the beach from Fourteenth street to Second street, 'andtalso on Tybee Illet; - Mr'Abrahsms stated that a permanant'sea -wall the entire length of the island was neer'e'1 and that it could be done with a PTPA project, the originalosts to the propert y ownerw on the beach front was estimated at 81.50 per front foot, but that since prices had risen the cost now would be about $2.00 per front foot, he statedthat t Town should pay for the streets leading to the Strand, if the Town could not pay for them then the property owners should. Mr. Nichols stated that it would be a good investment to extend the sea- wall the entire length of the bstch but that if anything was to be done it must be done now if WPA help is expected, he stated that in event some of the property owners would not agree to come in on the project, the entire sea -wall wouldfoA have to be built nowa.lthougn he would like to see it con tinnnus. If the property owners agree to come in the project would have to sponsored by 4he Town. Councilman S1otin moved that the Tow: sponsor the project as outlined,_ which was that the property owners pay the front foot cost of their property and the Town pay the front foot costs of the public streets, Councilman Logan seconded and the motion passed.. The °e wa considerable discussion relative to how tie matter should be handled, after which, Mr. Abrahams moved that A comittee be apointed to contact every property owner on the Strang, and get their approval and agreement to come in,. Dr. Norton seconded and the motion pissed. Mr. Nichols stated.. :,_iat the cost to the property owner would be $2.50 per front foot, plus the Town furnishing the present equipment that it now has, but that $10,000,00 is necessary now so that project can be opened by February lst, 1940. Manor Righton appointed the following a committee to serve to see that the property owner^, ^interested, were properly contaced and signed up; a.H..Ab a.hams, Chairman, A.B.Lovett, C.O.Day; and a sub - sommittee Wm.
