HomeMy Public PortalAboutResolution No. 022-87 03-23-1987 RESOLUTION 22-87 • A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RICHLAND HILLS, TEXAS, AND CITIZENS OF RICHLAND HILLS, TEXAS TO DESIGNATE ENGLISH THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF TEXAS AND THE UNITED STATES WHEREAS, the people of the United States have brought with them the ethnic heritages of many nations; and WHEREAS, the United States has been greatly enriched by such cultural diversity and recognizes the dignity of all ethnic heritages; and WHEREAS, the people of the United States must live together as citizens of one nation; and WHEREAS, the traditional language of the United States has always been English, a knowledge of which is essential to the full exercise of constitutional freedom a.nd civic responsibility, and to individual prosperity and independence, and WHEREAS, the English language has been our strongest bond to one another as fellow citizens and has contributed substantially to national and international unity and social cohesiveness; and WHEREAS, recent policies have unwisely granted recognition to rival languages which threaten to undermine the status of English as the language of the United States and of the State of Texas NOW THEREFORE, PREMISES CONSIDERED, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Richland Hills, Texas and the citizens of the City of Richland Hills, Texas that we the undersigned duly elected Mayor and Council of the City of Richland Hills, Texas and citizens of the City of Richland Hills, Texas do hereby signify by our signatures that we petition the Texas Legislature and the Congress of the United States to designate English as the official language by amendment of the Constitutions of the United States and of the State of Texas. • MOVED, SECONDED AND PASSED this -~3ca~_ day of March, 1987 by the City Council of the City of Richland Hills, Texas at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Richland Hills, Texas. 1 MAYOR ATT.
