April 19th, 1940.
A special meeting of Council was held to -day at 3 :30 p.m., in the
Council Chamber, and was attended by Mayor Righton, who presided
and Councilmen Slotin, Griffin, Lovell, Daniels, Henry and
Town Attorney Dutton. Also Mrs. Laura Moore, Mrs. Mary Lynch,
Mrs. Carmel Ross,TW,H.Bailey, G.A.Gordon and D.J.Sheehan.
The meeting was called for the purpose of;
Hearing protests from property owners relative to their
assessments.
Handling matters relative to the WPA project.
Appointing a Chief of Police.
Mrs. Moor,,Mrs. Lynch, Mrs. Ross, W.H.Bailey, G.A.Gordon,
and D.J.Sheehan protested against the assessments on their
property for 1940. Councilman Lovell moved that the matter
be referred to the Assessment Committee to investigate and
power to act. Councilman Henry seconded and the motion passed.
A letter was read from M.W.Dixon threatening to enjoin the
town in the erection of the new sea - wall, if he is prohibited
from taking sand from the beach to fill in adie some of his
property adjacent to the beach between 13th and 14th dideets,
the Town Attorney was asked his opinion and stated that the town
owns the Strand and could regulate it, but that Mr. Dixon
could tie tip town if he wanted to - it was decidedto request Mr.
Dixon to appear before Council at its meeting next Friday.
Mr. W.J.Moore, recently appointed Chief of Police tenderdd his
resignation to take effect immediately, stating that for personal
reasond he desired to do this.
Councilman Daniels moved that M.A.Goette b4 appointed Chief
of Police and ex-officio Tax Collector, to be employed by the
month, effective May lst, 1940. Councilman Griffin seconded,
a vote was not called ter as the Mayor refuded to entertain the
motion.
Councilman Slotin; moved that the town sponsor the dedication
of route 80 and that it place a plaque in some suitable location
in the town, without cost to the town, showing that route S0
terminates at the Atlantic Ocean end at SaVammah Beaehgi
Councilman Griffin seconded and the motion passed.
Councilman Lovell informed Council that he had contracted with
the International Harvester Co , for the road working equipment
at a cost of $546.20.
Councilman Slotin moved that the Chairman of the Public Werks
Committee be authorized to buy 50 benches to used on the side -
wale on the parkways, Counclman Griffin seconded and the
motion passed.
Councilman Lovell moved that the town buy 100 chairs for tote
auditorium, Councilman Henry seconded and the motion passed.
