HomeMy Public PortalAbout19401111CCMeeting72 Savannah and Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00) with the Savannah Bank & Trust Company of Savannah; the Mayor of said municipality signing said notes on behalf of the Town of Savannah- Beach, Tybee Island, his signature being attested by the Clerk of Council. IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of Council is authorized and directed to reduce said indebtedness to these two banks periodically until the said loan is paid in full. There being no further business, Council adjourned, subject to the call of the Mayor. 1' .4 :..� ler of Council j ayor Savannah Beach, Tybee Island, Georgia, November 11, 1940 The regular meeting of Council was held today at 4 p.m., and was attended by Mayor Jones, who presided, and Councilmen Biotin, . Lovell, Griffin, Daniels, Henry and Ferguson. The minutes of the meeting of October 5th were read and approved. Councilman Siotin read a statement of receipts and disbursements for the month ending-.October 31, 1940 which showed a balance of $5514.00. He also read bills amounting to $710.78 for the month of October, and moved that they be paid. Councilman Griffin seconded and the motion passed. Councilman Griffin moved that the interest charged against the property of J.G. Christian which was advertised for sale at the Court House on the first Tuesday of November, be reduced to $27.40, which would reduce the taxes and other charges due on this property from $4o6.76 to $324.57. Councilman Henry seconded and the motion passed. The Mayor reported that : - (1 -) On the inlet where the bulkhead is being erected to protect Alley #1 and the property of R.M. Demere, the work had to be stopped.due to the shortage of convict labor, but the he expected the work to be started again real soon; and (2) that he had discussed with Mr. Garmany the matter of the concrete side -walk in the area north of Tybrisa to 14th Street which had settled in some places, and he was informed by Mr. Garmany that he would sink some piling to support the side -walk; and (3) that there was available in Savannah, salvaged lumbitr, #1 common Cypress in Al condition with bad ends removed in 73 various sizes, that could be purchased at $27.00 per thousand; and (4) that the commanding officer at Fort Screven was getting funds from the National Defense Fund for sanitary improvements aroung Army posts and camps. He had received a letter from J.B. McCrary Company stating the $75,000,000 would be available to the W.P.A above their funds for work of this character, and suggested that the W.P.A. be contacted to obtain a commitment from them, and then Post Commander and obtain a letter stating the bad oonditign existing around the Post, then send it through the local office of the W.P.A., then through Atlanta, then Washington. The Mayor stated that it was quite necessary that a picnic shed be provided, for visitors and residents of the Island, and asked. Counoil'.e opinion. Councilman Griffin moved that the Mayor be authorized and empowered to build the shed with a rest room included and that he use his discretion in the matter. Councilman Ferguson seconded and the motion passed. A bill for $729.84 covering eresote material that was borrowed from the W.P.A. after the August Storm to repair the bulk -head at Tilton Avenue was, on motion of Councilman Griffin, and seconded by Councilman Henry, approved and passed. The Mayor informed Council that the estimated cost of the disposal plant as submitted by J.B. McCrary Company was $187,597.00. The cost as submitted by the W.P.A. was $233.297.00 on the following e' basis; The W.P.A. would allocate 65.46% of the cost, and the Town'would put up 31.54% of the cost. The Town's portion would be $73,592.00. This was received as information. The Mayor informed Council that he felt that under the new W.P.A. set up for Malarial control, the Town could get some help in . handling ditches, etc. It was the opinion of Council that he make an effort to get the available funds. The Mayor informed Council that Mr. May had requested that some very bad holes existing in Atlantic Avenue be filled. He would like to have it scarified and rolled. It was decided that this would be attended to as soon as we could get to it. Councilman Ferguson informed Council that the roadway to the garbage dump was in a bad condition, and should be filled. He was requested to have this done. A letter was received from the Library Board requesting that the Town put in some new shelves, etc., in the Library building as it was necessary to take care of the children's activities. The motion passed. 74 A letter was read from the Savannah Broadcasting Company requesting the Town's contribution to a fish supper to be known as Old Salt's Annual Fish Fry, to be held on December '19th, 1940. This was received as information. Chatham Radiator Company presented a corrected bill amounting to $85.48 which had been reduced from $103.10. This covered work and parts on the Mack truck that is being used by the W.P.A. forces on the seawall project and which is owned by the Town. There was some question as to the work done on the truck, and Mr. H.M. Germany, Project Superintendent with -held payment of the bill until it could be corrected. Councilman Lovell moved that it be paid. Councilman Daniels seconded and the motion passed. Councilman Slotin informed Council that in connection with the seawall project, the Town had incurred obligations above the project estimate which was $18,125.00.
