Last year, a rocket set off by an individual on the beach went astray and set fire to a nearby home. Luckily, no one was killed or injured, although the damage to the home and to the family belongings was significant. Both the State of Georgia and the City of Tybee have made personal use of fireworks illegal. Please enjoy our fireworks at the Pier without endangering our homes, families, and friends! Roll Back Your Trash Carts Trash carts by the road are unsightly and inconsiderate of your neighbors. In addition, City Ordinance Section 22-192 requires that trash carts be rolled back from the City right of way and stored on your own property within 24 hours of scheduled waste removal. Violators shall, upon conviction, be subject to a fine not to exceed $300.00 and a jail term not to exceed 20 days, either or both, all at the discretion of the court. Watch Out for Pedestrians! Georgia State Law requires that you STOP for a pedestrian in a cross walk once they are within one and half lanes of your lane. Essentially, if someone is crossing or trying to cross in a marked sidewalk, you must stop to allow them to cross. It is also illegal to pass a car that is stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume that there is a pedestrian crossing. Also remember that the speed limit on Butler Avenue is 30 MPH from the Curve all the way to Tybrisa. Following the speed limit will help you stop in time at crosswalks, too! Utility Bill Reminder Don’t forget utility bills are due the 20th of each month! Building Address Numbering Required Every building must have an address marker which is easily visible from the street. While this requirement is an enforceable ordinance, it is also common sense. If disaster strikes and you suffer a medical or other emergency in your home, emergency services need to be able to find your address quickly to help you! In the case of a fire, your neighbors can also be affected if the firemen cannot figure out where the fire is! Please check that your address appears on your property in a place that is quickly seen from the street to provide you and your family the best possible protection. Better Hometown Initiative COMMUNITY VISIONING WORKSHOP Come hear more about the Better Hometown initiative on July 27th from 5pm to 6pm at the City Hall Auditorium. Share your thoughts of the strengths and opportunities within the business corridor. Your participation at this meeting will help the Better Hometown Board set goals for the next year and beyond. Cable Access Channel 7 Program Changes Tybee residents who are Comcast subscribers can view videos of local events such as parades and celebrations as well as City Council and Planning Commission meetings on channel 7. Recently, several water conservation videos have been added to the schedule. If you wish to create broadcast content or request broadcast of other programs, please contact the City’s IT Department. You can also request copies of meetings on DVD for $10 per disk by calling the City Clerk at x103. Council meetings are also on the web at http://www.fellowcitizens.net/first1.html Bicycle Rules of the Road Follow the law. Cyclists have the same rights and duties as drivers. You must obey all traffic laws. Be predictable. Ride in a straight line, signal turns, and check your blind spots before turning or changing lanes. Be conspicuous. Make sure drivers can see you, use lights, and wear bright clothing. Be aware. Anticipate moves of others on the road. Beware of potholes, grates or debris. Ride ready. Check tires, brakes, chains, derailleurs and quick releases before riding. Be ready for emergency repairs. Wear your helmet! Littering Fines Visitors to the beach must keep their litter in a container at all times! Loose paper, food or other materials that could blow away and create a mess on the beach may subject the responsible party to a $100 fine! Take a litter bag with you to the beach; always place your litter immediately in the bag; drop the bag at one of litter barrels near the beach walkovers. And, thanks!
