In addition, our telephone dial-out notification is evolving, with special opt-in capability finally rolling out during the month of September. Residents’ land line phones are already included in the system, and the opt-in utility will allow you to add cell phones, work numbers, and emails to the way you will be notified in any City emergency if the need arises. We will make further announcements on all available communications channels when the opt-in system becomes available. Watch Out for Pedestrians! As our businesses successfully expand the visiting season, please keep in mind that Georgia State Law requires that you STOP for a pedestrian in a cross walk once they are within one and half lanes of your lane, whether we are in- or off-season! Essentially, if someone is crossing or trying to cross in a marked sidewalk, you must stop to allow them to cross. It is also illegal to pass a car that is stopped at a crosswalk – you must assume that there is a pedestrian crossing. Also remember that the speed limit on Butler Avenue is 30 MPH from the Curve all the way to Tybrisa. Following the speed limit will help you stop in time at crosswalks, too! PLEASE STAY OFF THE SANDBARS! The shape of the sand bars off the south end changes every day. When just a few inches of water are RUSHING over the sands during a tidal change, the water, weighing some 60 pounds per cubic foot, creates an irresistible force that can easily knock you over and carry you away within just a few minutes of the tide change. This is worth repeating: The force of the water is IRRESISTIBLE and WILL knock you over and carry you away. Every day, our lifeguards warn people off the sand bars, often putting their own lives at risk to warn people they must get back to shore without delay. Rescues there are common. If you have guests in your home, if you run a hotel, B&B, or rental business, PLEASE make sure to inform them that walking out on the sandbars off our southern beaches is an extremely dangerous pastime. It looks easy and fun, but looks are deceptive; far too often the results are tragic and easily avoided death. Feel free to share a copy of our warning and Channel 7 slide from our web at http://www.cityoftybee.org/OceanRescue.aspx#3156. Think safety! DO NOT VENTURE OUT ON THE SANDBARS! Leadership Tybee The City is working with community members to groom our future leadership under the grant from the Fanning Institute’s Community Leadership Initiative at the University of Georgia. However, the goal to begin in September has proven to be a little too aggressive, so deadlines have been moved out, and the program should begin in January of 2010. The primary goals for Leadership Tybee are to create a positive economic force on the island and to encourage and develop a well-informed community. The goals for class participants are to improve leadership skills and knowledge of the community and its major challenges. The class will apply those leadership skills to generate measurable projects and goals to demonstrate their commitment to making Tybee a better place to live and work. Anyone on Tybee can nominate a resident or worker on the island as a potential participant in the program. Nominees will be invited to complete an application form, including a project proposal, for acceptance. Nominations are due at City Hall by December 8th. Applications will then be due from nominees December 15th, with classes set to begin in January. Click Leadership Tybee at www.cityoftybee.org or stop by City Hall to request a nomination form. 14th Street Drainage Project To reduce drainage problems in the area, a major project is under way requiring coordination with contractors and utilities by DPW to double the capacity of the 14th Street outlet. The in-ground drainage work is to be scheduled this month after Labor Day to reduce traffic impact during Tybee’s busy season. Flu Shots Regular Flu Shots (NOT H1N1 yet!) will be given Wednesday, October 7th, in the Cafeteria, from 1–4 pm by Memorial Health.  Cash, Check, Credit Cards or Social Security will be taken for the cost, which is expected to be at or below last year’s $25 per inoculation. Other sessions are being scheduled later as well. Utility Bill Reminder Don’t forget utility bills are due the 20th of each month!
