HomeMy Public PortalAboutYMCA.doc ___________________________ 2009, 3rd Quarter Summary Highlights Community and Family Development: Guest pass usage has increase by $1500 over this time last year. Over 600 guests have visited the YMCA so far in 2009. Our volunteer board of directors have worked tirelessly over the past few months in special projects such as fundraising for our priceless gifts scholarship fund, health and wellness suggestions, skate nights, and address facility access concerns. Our Annual Pumpkin Patch and Spooky Skate had over 200 little ghouls and goblins and their parents, decorated pumpkins, and enjoyed hot dogs and candy. This free community event offered a special spooky roller skating event and costume contest too. What’s Next--Christmas with Santa—we are expecting over 400 participants to the annual visit with Santa in the gym immediately following the parade. Activities include free presents, bounce house, hayrides, decorating Christmas cards for the nursing home, and refreshments. Adults and Senior Citizens: The Beach Chair Brigade danced in their first parade at Piratesfest. This feisty group of women performs with beach chairs to “Surfing Safari”. They will be returning for an encore performance at the Christmas Parade. Over 50 senior citizens are involved with the Yeepies/Active Adult League. Our fall senior field trips have included a trip to the Star Fish Café, Keller’s Flea Market and the Cracker Barrel. Our Yeepies meeting guest speakers this fall have included Kennett Yow from the Ronald McDonald House. Ongoing Monthly Senior Activities include hand and foot cards, shag dance demonstrations, movie marathons, and Yeepies guest speakers. Health Screenings from St. Joseph’s Candler are held quarterly at the YMCA and are free to members and smart-seniors. These screenings will check blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol, etc. The Active Adult League is collecting materials for shoe box gifts to the troops overseas. Donations can be dropped off at the front desk in the gym. What’s Next—The AAL’s will be touring the Fresh Air Home with Sue Seydon, taking a trip to Love’s Seafood, Touring downtown Christmas Lights and a Larger than Life Gingerbread House. Sports: Pick Up Basketball and Volleyball are becoming increasingly popular in the gym. Games are held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday each week. These programs are free and open to the community. Fall soccer is coming to an end. We had three teams and 35 kids participating this fall. Thanks to Jim Rustuccia for his help as a volunteer coach for the under-8 team. The end of season tournament will be the week of November 20th. Gymnastics is back. Classes are open to both boys and girls and teach tumbling, coordination, stretching, and movement on the bars, beam, floor, and vault. What’s Next--We are now registering for winter basketball. Practices will begin in January. Priceless Gifts Scholarships: 80 scholarships have been awarded in 2009 so far. We are seeing an increase from 2008 and expect this to continue in the future. Over $22,000 has been awarded to families for sports, child care, and membership programs in this first quarter. This number does not include City of Tybee Island employee memberships. This year’s Priceless Gifts Campaign raised $23,500 that will be awarded to youth and families on Tybee for memberships, summer camp, child care, and sports programs. Funds will also be used to purchase bike helmets for all Tybee kids. No child or family is ever turned away from a YMCA program based on an inability to pay. The process is completely confidential and can be renewed every six months. What’s Next—Our volunteer board of directors are eagerly planning our 2010 campaign with training sessions in November. Youth Programs: Fun Club has 15 participants registered an averages about 9 kids a week. Our afterschool program is hosted at the YMCA in the Old School Building. Kids’ Yoga is our newest fitness class dedicated to helping kids adopt healthy exercise habits. Classes are held on Friday afternoons at 4:30. What’s Next—Our After School Fun Club is under review to be approved for licensing from the state agency, Bright from the Start. Although we are already providing quality child care and exceeding state standards, this license will provide additional credibility to our program. Teens: Fall Teen Cuisine Classes began on October 14th. This interactive cooking class is open to teens ages 11-15 and is held Wednesday afternoons in the Cafeteria. So far, we average about 12 teens each week. This session focuses on an international flair with students learning about cuisine from different cultures including Latin, Japanese, Jewish, Italian, German, etc. We have special guest chefs from the Coast Guard teaching our young chefs as well. Youth Group Nights with Trinity United Methodist Church gives teens spiritual guidance, safe and fun activities, and positive adult role models. The kids took a field trip to a concert this summer thanks to great volunteers like Andy Lamon and other TUMC volunteers. This group meets monthly for teens ages 11-15. Teen Volunteers have been busy with new fall projects like skate night volunteers and special event assistants at our Annual Pumpkin Patch event. We had over 20 teens volunteering at this event. What’s Next-- Our next Youth Group Night will be November 16th in Jaycee Park with a game of Capture the Flag. The next volunteer opportunities include skate nights and Christmas with Santa on December 12th. Facilities, Fitness, and Membership Renovations in the YMCA and Old School Building are now complete. We would like to thank the City of Tybee and DPW for all of your hard work. The fitness area has been expanded, new windows and insulation were installed throughout the old school and YMCA, and the new aerobics room is over 1800 square feet and can accommodate our growing number of aerobics participants. We also added five new pieces of cardio equipment to our workout facility. The Tybee Island YMCA is working with Oceanside Nursing home to provide Senior Chair aerobics classes on site at the nursing home. Mobility and transportation are no longer concerns for those wishing to workout on Tybee. Our instructor teaches classes twice a week at Oceanside. Third quarter numbers are in for aerobics classes and facility usage. The numbers are as follows: Fitness Center visits: 5225 Tybee Gymnasium visits: 1195 Exercise Class participants: 1921 Members: 782, Memberships: 383 What’s Next—We are revamping our sign-in procedures to ensure facility access control and increased safety for our members. We are also creating a stretching room in the Y facility so members have a quiet place to cool down. In Conclusion: The Tybee Island YMCA just keeps growing and ever expanding. We are proud of our community partnerships that help make sure we cater to all groups on the island. As we celebrate our 10th year serving the community, we are also celebrating record numbers of members, thriving youth programs, and better quality equipment and facilities and smiling staff and volunteers to help make it all come together. We appreciate the support of the City of Tybee and the flexibility to facilitate programs that address all populations for the Tybee Island. We are focusing on expanding senior programs, strengthening teen and youth programs, building solid foundations of health and wellness for all ages, and providing additional opportunities for families to come together in a healthy atmosphere. In 2009, we look forward to a continued positive relationship with the City of Tybee and welcome any questions, concerns, or updates necessary to build trust and greater commitment from the entire community. We know that each year our need to allocate financial assistance to those needing scholarships will increase. We will strive to provide affordable, consistent, and quality-driven programming so that all may participate and promise to never turn anyone away for an inability to pay.
