To the McCall City Council
I am presenting the following letter to Adams County on Feb 22nd. I am hoping McCall City
Council will send comments to Adams County. The negative impacts from the proposed
Brundage Mountain Resort plan to McCall cannot be denied, and I rely on our council to get
answers to important questions I have raised.
I am not anti-growth. I am for smart, sustainable growth.
And that is why I ask Adams County Commissioners to postpone any more approvals for
Brundage Mountain Resort(BMR).
We are witnessing catastrophic wildfire destruction in the West. The BMR plan would only
increase a wildfire risk to their complex, our surrounding National Forest, and the City of
McCall.
The Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) has recently stopped significant developments of
this type. Courts have ruled against actions that are a risk to public health, safety, and the
environment posed by wildfires. They also ruled there is a need to integrate climate change
considerations into environmental analyses.
And what considerations are in BMR's proposal for fragmenting existing wildlife corridors
and habitats? This proposal will create human-wildlife encounters where wildlife always loses.
And the studies are clear on development impact, which is "Animals don't happen by accident;
they need habitat. Wildlife needs space and security, and room to move without the stress of
constant encounters with things that make them uneasy. Like us."
BMR's proposal will add to the affordable housing issues in Valley(McCall) and Adams
County.
BMR's proposal will add to sprawl outside their complex.
BMR's proposal will add to employee issues in both counties.
BMR's proposal will add to the growing issues of recreational pressure to fragile areas of our
forests and watersheds.
BMR's proposal will add to McCall's emergency services (EMS) issues, increasing response
times and increasing risks to McCall residents' and visitors' public health and safety.
Will McCall need to provide EMS services for the BMR development?
80% of the ski resort areas in the U.S. require snowmaking, and future trends in climate
change will need Brundage to make snow.
We live in the arid West and Adams county, and many parts of Idaho are in a drought.
Four thousand residents in Adams County are affected by drought; This January is the driest
on record over the past 128 years and the 24th driest year to date for Adams County. We have
many of the same water issues in McCall and Valley County. We need an independent water
study on BMR's proposal for the demands from more people and especially regarding future
snowmaking trends based on scientific data. Aquifers are connected to rivers and lakes. How
will BMR's proposal impact McCall's watersheds?
Please don't rush to approve BMR's proposals without answering the questions many people
have raised. Investors' goals are about a return on investment, not the issues I mentioned.
I provided the board with many scientific links to support my position. Planting another
development will be permanent, and if we don't scrutinize BMR's plans, their plans will lead
to issues devastating to our communities, forests, water, and wildlife.
