HomeMy Public PortalAboutr 22-220#22-220 Date of AdontionLNovember 10, 2022 RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF VISION ZERO WHEREAS, traffic fatalities and serious injuries have been climbing since 2020; and WHEREAS, Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all; and WHEREAS, the Middlesex County Board of Commissioners has pledged to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries on roadways in the County by 2040 and will work in partnership with municipalities, agencies, and other stakeholders to achieve that goal; and WHEREAS, Assemblymen Robert Karabinchak and Daniel Benson and Senator Patrick Diegnan sponsored bills which created a commission to study the effectiveness of Vision Zero; and WHEREAS, the Borough of Carteret supports policies and programs which reduce traffic crashes, deaths, and injuries, NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Borough of Carteret supports the goals of Vision Zero and supports the plan of the Middlesex County Commissioners to eliminate motor vehicle crashes, fatalities, and serious injuries by 2040. Adopted this 10" day of November, 2020 and certified as a true copy the original on November 14, 2022. Reiman Borough of Carteret 61 Cooke Avenue Carteret, NJ 07008 Dear Mayor Reiman , �fl In September, the Middlesex County Board of Commissioners adopted a "Vision Zero Action Plan to Eliminate Traffic Related Fatal and Serious Injury Crashes". This is a countywide effort to dramatically reduce fatalities for all road users and increase road safety. The Plan requires safety programs involving education, enforcement, and engineering and buttresses a pledge made by the Commissioners in July to eliminate "traffic fatalities and serious injuries on roadways in the County by 2040." Now, the New Jersey Assembly Transportation Committee has created a commission to determine if the state should also adopt Vision Zero. Middlesex County Assemblymen Robert Karabinhcak and Daniel Benson are co-sponsors. Senator Patrick Diegnan sponsored the Senate bill. At our meeting on October 27". I'm asking the Board of Keep Middlesex Moving to adopt a resolution in support of Vision Zero. Today, I'm asking you and your municipality to join this initiative by committing to Vision Zero. I've enclosed the County's resolution and a draft resolution for your consideration. Very truly yours, William Neary Executive Director Middlesex County Adopted Resolution: 22-1207-R File Number: 22-1207-R Administration Building 75 Bayard Street New Brunswick, NJ 08901 Adoption Of Vision Zero Action Plan To Eliminate Traffic Related Fatal And Serious Injury Crashes WHEREAS, Vision Zero is a strategy that aims to eliminate all motor vehicles crashes that result in fatalities and serious injuries while providing safe, healthy and equitable mobility for all; and WHEREAS, the Middlesex County Vision Zero Action Plan is a functional plan of the Destination 2040 Strategic Plan, which formalizes the County commitment to this strategic transportation safety initiative. WHEREAS, the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners adopted the following Vision Zero Pledge on July 21, 2022: Middlesex County is committed to eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries on roadways in the County by 2040. Middlesex County will work in Partnership with municipalities, agencies, and other stakeholders to achieve this goal. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of County Commissioners of the County of Middlesex hereby approves the adoption of the Vision Zero Action Plan to Eliminate Traffic Related fatal and serious injury crashes; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution will be forwarded to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
