ENDORSING CAMPAIGN TO
FIX NEW JERSEY NURSNG HOMES
WHEREAS, safe staffing levels are the key to ensuring that all nursing home
residents receive the attention that they need to live in dignity; and
WHEREAS, nursing home staffing levels currently required in New Jersey arc
nearly 40% lower than the levels experts recommend; and
WHEREAS, adequate staff-to-resident ratios that are easy to understand and
enforce must be established, and information about nursing home staffing levels
should be available to consumers and resident family members; and
WHEREAS, poverty wages and inadequate benefits have created high employee
turnover and undermined nursing home quality of care; and
WHEREAS, nursing homes must provide decent jobs to help attract and keep
qualified staff; and
WHEREAS, we must reform the Medicaid reimbursement system for nursing
home care so that it provides for and guarantees quality care, higher staffing
ratios, good careers for workers and adequate funding; and
WHEREAS, nursing home workers and residents, family members, seniors,
people with disabilities, religious and political leaders, and advocates are joining
together to promote quality, long term care in New Jersey in order to ensure that
all New Jersey nursing home residents receive the care they deserve.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Council of the
Borough of Carteret, County of Middlesex, and State of New Jersey, hereby
endorses and supports the Campaign to Fix New Jersey Nursing Homes.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution shall be forwarded
to State Senator Joseph F. Vitale, Assemblywoman Arlene M. Friscia and
Assemblyman John S. Wisniewski.
