DEVELOPMENT PATTERNS
• Traditional Neighborhoods: Encourage traditional neighborhood development with human
scale, compact development patterns that facilitate pedestrian activity
• Infill Development: Maximize existing infrastructure and encourage development and
redevelopment near the traditional urban core
• Sense of Place: Maintain traditional activity areas as the community focal point and develop
new activity centers/focal points with mixed use, pedestrian friendly areas where people choose
to gather
COMMUNITY PRESERVATION
• Heritage: Maintain and preserve the traditional community character through revitalization
and compatible new development
• Open Space: Minimize land consumption in new development and set aside open space for
parks, greenbelts and wildlife corridors
• Environmental: Protect sensitive areas from negative development impacts, particularly
maintaining traditional character and quality of life and preserving natural terrain, drainage and
vegetation
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
• Appropriate Businesses: Encourage businesses suitable for the community and long-term
sustainability and that support economic activities and future prospects for job opportunities
• Employment Options: Promote a range of job types to meet the diverse needs of the local
workforce
COMMUNITY
• Transportation Alternatives: Provide and encourage the use of transportation alternatives,
including transit, bike and pedestrian facilities
• Housing Choices: Ensure a range of housing sizes, costs and density to make it possible for
all who work in the community to live in the community
• Educational Opportunities: Educational and training opportunities should be readily
available in the community
• Regional Identity: Promote and preserve the regional sense of place defined through
shared regional characteristics
• Growth Preparedness: Identify and adopt pre-requisites for achieving the desired types of
growth, such as supporting infrastructure for development
INTERGOVERNMENTAL COORDINATION
• Local Self-Determination: Communities should develop and achieve their own vision with
state technical and financial support
• Regional Cooperation: Regional cooperation should be encouraged in setting priorities,
identifying needs and finding collaborative solutions to address those needs
Additional Comments:
Promote Historic Preservation; Focus goals on growth management, rather than on growth and development.

circles represent those goals identified by the majority of the participants as high priorities.
