A1: This joint project between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, and the City of Tybee Island, Ga., will replace sand on the beach at Tybee Island to aid in storm damage reduction. Q2: When will this project begin and end? A2: Construction is currently scheduled to start in early November 2014 and conclude in late February 2015. Q3: Who will perform this beach renourishment? A3: We have not awarded a contract for this project. The contract solicitation period will begin on August 5. We expect to award the contract no later than Sept. 30. Q4: How much is the contract worth? A4: We won’t know exact costs until we award the contract. We have $12 million of federal funds budgeted and just under $7.8 million of non-federal (local) funds available for this project. Q5: How many cubic yards of sand will be added to the beach during this project? A5: We may add up to approximately 1.4 million cubic yards of sand to the beach. Q6: How much will this project disrupt beach activities? A6: While there will be some disruption to beach activities, the work will be performed outside the normal tourist season. Only sections of the beach will be closed to public access as the project progresses. As the contractor finishes in each designated work area, it will re-opened to the public. The public will have adequate access to recreational use of the beach throughout the project. Q7: Have you coordinated this project with the City of Tybee Island, its mayor and its city council? A7: Yes. The City of Tybee Island is a full partner in this project. Q8: Where can I go to track progress of this project? A8: [CCO note: Unknown at this time. Will require coordination with the City of Tybee Island. Savannah District does not anticipate operating a web page dedicated to this project. The local sponsor may choose to do so or may post progress in another manner (information board, for instance).] Q9: Will local workers be hired to perform work on this contract? A9: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will award this project to a prime contractor with expertise in this type of work. Hiring workers and subcontractors then becomes the responsibility of the prime contractor. Q10: When was the last beach renourishment at Tybee Island? A10: The last beach renourishment was completed in December 2008. It came in under budget and ahead of schedule. Q11: When will the next beach renourishment be conducted? A11: This will be the final renourishment to complete the 50-year project life cycle which ends in 2024. Any subsequent renourishments will require a new project authorization from Congress. Q12: What is the cost-share ratio for this project? A12: The federal government will cover 60.7% of the cost and the non-federal sponsor, the City of Tybee Island, will cover 39.3%. Q13: Will you give the public adequate notice about this project? A13: The Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Tybee Island will keep the public informed about the project, its daily location, and safety precautions throughout the project. Q14: Where will you obtain sand for this project? A14: We will take sand from a pre-designated, ocean ‘borrow site’ about one mile off- shore of Tybee Island which was used for the previous renourishment in 2008.
