Hughes Draft Notes 4/21/2011jrl BICYCLE FRIENDLY NOTES April 12, 2010 PRESENT: Diane Schleicher, Bill Garbett, Denise Dubuque, Kyle Pratt, Jonathan Hagan, Marie Rodriguez, Robert Bryson, Gina Casagrande, Jan LeViner Discussion items: City Council would like notes and suggestions from the Bicycle Friendly meetings Stop signs – Second Avenue o Neighbors had concerns with vehicle speeding without the two stop signs at 7th and 13th Street on 2nd Avenue. o Signs were put back o Want to make Second Avenue more “Bicycle Friendly” o Bicycle traffic off Jones Avenue Thank you notes will be going out to sponsors of the Bicycle Rodeo held on March 26, 2011 o McDonald’s o Tybee Island YMCA o State Farm, Angela Wiles o Fat Tire Bicycle o Savannah Bicycle Campaign Diane Schleicher would like to institute a Tybee Youth Bike Club o 10-12 age group o Teach how to ride safely o Teach basic repairs o Participants would receive bright yellow jersey and would wear helmets o Nominal fee to participate o Program would run through YMCA Marie Rodriguez is concerned that children are not wearing helmets. She asked Chief Bryson if there is anything that can be done to enforce this state law. Since there is no punishment for children not wearing helmets and due to staffing issues – no. Diane Schleicher asked everyone to be thinking of a solution for crosswalks for bicycles route to safely cross Highway 80 (First Street) and bring them back next month for discussion.
