CITY OF TYBEE ISLAND
Bicycle Friendly Committee Minutes
January 10, 2012 11AM
Members in attendance: Co-Chair Denise Dubuque, Diane Schleicher, Chantel Morton, Sunny Brown, Jan LeViner
and Michael Bodine Gina Casagrande and Councilmen Paul Wolff.
Chair Dubuque called the meeting to order.
The Committee reviewed the previous meeting minutes from October 2011; a motion was made to approve the
minutes, it was seconded and unanimously approved.
Survey Monkey was discussed; review of last survey’s questions and possible identification of new ones to
be on February meeting agenda.
First Street Bike Route pole re-location is complete. City Manager Schleicher will request a quote for
stamped concrete between the curb and sidewalk.
Denise noted that Bicycle Friendly Business designations have been increased from two to four years. The
current Bicycle Friendly Applications are due 1/13/12. Also, League of American Bicyclists currently has an
on-line survey and Bicycle Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) is coming up in June.
Michael received an email from resident Vicki Worden. She stated that bicyclists on Tybee were not
following “Rules of the Road” and suggested videos at the bike shop(s). Denise will contact Ms. Worden
with a recap of the discussion which addressed education of the public: rules of the road on the water bills,
channel 7 information, Mayor acknowledgement at the start of the Council Meeting, and a video displayed
at Fat Tire Bikes. Denise will also attempt to enlist Jim Stone’s (Tytan) help with marketing and/or a video.
Memorial Park Bicycle Path paving was approved by the Planning Commission and requires engineering and
a topographical survey prior to Council presentation. The BFC discussed different options for paving and
agreed that a “demonstrative” pathway would be educational to the public; solicit contractors for
sponsoring different techniques/materials. The City Manager will discuss with the City’s Engineer for the
project, Downer Davis.
The Bicycle Rodeo will be held in conjunction with the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day on 4/28/12. Dialogue
ensued regarding participation, publicity and sponsorship.
City Manager Schleicher noted the Hwy 80 Bicycle Path Grant status was in the engineer selection process.
A motion was made to adjourn, seconded and approved.
