City Council December 21, 2010 Page 2 ANALYSIS: The City of Temple City was incorporated on May 25, 1960. Based on a recommendation from the Parks and Recreation Commission, the City Council agreed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of incorporation throughout 2010 at various community events throughout the year and with a variety of commemorative items available to the public. ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS • The 50th anniversary celebration began on January 11, 2010 when the City sponsored the January Chamber Mixer at the newly completed Annex at Live Oak Park. • Several anniversary events were scheduled in May to commemorate the actual date of incorporation. Included in the May events were the Civic Center Walking Tour and Open House on May 5th, the 50th Anniversary Dinner on May 21st, and the 50th Celebration Concert and dedication of the bronze bust of Walter P. Temple on May 22nd • The final official 50th anniversary event of the year occurred on December 6th as the City sponsored the Chamber's annual Holiday Mixer. • In addition to the special events listed above, many of the City's existing community events commemorated the 50th anniversary this past year as well. The Camellia Festival used the 50th anniversary logo on their program and car signs, included a 50th anniversary page in the program, and invited the Royal Court from 1960 to participate in the parade; special 50th anniversary golden eggs were the top prizes in the annual Easter Egg Hunt; and the summer concert series kicked off with free root beer floats in 50th anniversary stadium cups. BRANDING • Temple City proudly commemorated 50 years of incorporation in 2010 by using a special 50t anniversary City seal and the 50th anniversary logo on letterhead, envelopes, commemorative items, flyers, and other publications. • 50th anniversary banners were displayed in Temple City Park and in City facilities throughout the year as well as across Las Tunas Drive during the month of May. • Commemorative items with the 50th anniversary seal or logo were sold this past year with free "giveaway" items available at the various events. MISCELLANEOUS • 50 Years in Town - The City celebrated its 50th anniversary by recognizing City Council December 21, 2010 Page 3 residents that have lived in Temple City for at least 50 years. Those residents received a "50 Years in Town" yard sign. • 50 Books for 50 Years - The community generously donated new books to the Temple City Library through the "50 Books for 50 Years" campaign. Over 275 books were collected and donated as part of the City's 50th anniversary. • Bronze Sculpture of Walter P. Temple - The City Council approved the commissioning of a bronze sculpture of Walter P. Temple by local artist Vic Riesau. The bust, which is currently on display in City Hall, will be permanently mounted on the new monument sign that will be located at the southeast corner of Temple City Park. We had hoped to have the monument sign constructed, and the bust located in its permanent location in 2010; however the project will not be completed until early 2011. 2010 was indeed a very special year for the City of Temple City. The City Council, commissioners, staff, volunteers, current and former residents, business owners, and visitors all had a hand in making the 50th anniversary of the City a year to remember. Whether it was attending 50th anniversary events, donating a book to the library, or picking up a 50th anniversary commemorative item Temple City truly celebrated 50 years as a community. CONCLUSION: Staff will provide an overview, including a power point presentation, of the various elements of the City's 50th anniversary celebration. The Council is requested to review then receive and file the information.
