HomeMy Public PortalAbout20140909Bicycle-Pedestrian Friendly Meeting Notes (2).docxBicycle / Pedestrian Friendly Committee Notes from September 9, 2014 meeting ATTENDEES: Sunni Brown, Bill Garbett, Paul Wolff, Diane Schleicher, Chantel Morton, Bruce Saunders, John Bennett, Vicki Worden, Guest: Beverly Davis, RS&H Ms. Brown called the meeting to order. Mr. Garbett moved to approve the minutes from the last meeting. Mr. Wolff seconded. The minutes were approved. Old Business: Update on Bicycle/Pedestrian Path – North of Hwy 80 Ms. Schleicher stated that the project is moving along. She stated that a DNR Variance must be obtained. She said that GDOT wants an archeological study since three is an old Civil War site. The cost is about $15k. Ms. Schleicher stated that Thomas and Hutton advised that this does not put the project on hold or end it. She said that it just documents it. The committee continued the discussion of the path. Ms. Schleicher said that there had been some questions about safety with bicycling. Officer Saunders explained that bicyclists have the same rules of the road as automobiles. The committee discussed helmet laws, right of way, crosswalk usage, etc. and general safety of cycling. Discuss Tybee Island Youth Bicycle Rally Ms. Schleicher stated that the Youth Bicycle Rally is tentatively October 19, 2014. Ms. Morton advised that October 19 was community day and an information table would be set up there for the bicycle rally. Ms. Schleicher said that there would be bike and helmet checks again. The committee discussed the details of the rally, including the route and stations along the route as well as prizes. New Business: Review RS & H Study Proposal for traffic calming on Jones Avenue and N. Campbell Ms. Schleicher reviewed the highlights of the traffic calming study. She stated that there is a cafeteria list of options. It has been to the Infrastructure and Public Safety Committees. Ms. Davis explained that an area for pedestrian study has been added by the lighthouse. She gave an overview of the traffic calming study. Ms. Schleicher said that she will add to the next council agenda to do the Jones Ave study first. If approved, the estimate is three months to finish. Ms. Schleicher discussed the Safe Routes to School / DOT Program. She said that she would approach the Maritime Academy about it. Mr. Wolff made a motion to adjourn. Mr. Garbett seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned.
