HomeMy Public PortalAbout20151110 Bicycle Friendly notes.docxBicycle / Pedestrian Friendly Committee Notes from November 10, 2015 meeting ATTENDEES: Paul Wolff, Diane Schleicher, Bruce Saunders, John Bennett, George Shaw, Joe Wilson, Vicki Worden, Joel Fobes and William Moseley Mr. Shaw called the meeting to order. Mr. Wolff moved to approve the minutes from the last meeting. Ms. Worden seconded. The minutes were approved. Old Business: Discuss the Status of Bicycle Friendly Status for Tybee Island Mr. Shaw advised that the Bicycle Friendly application was 90 % complete. Mr. Shaw advised that a survey would be put on the City’s website as well as paper copies of the survey in City Hall. He said that Doug Bean had been contacted about a way finding system for signage. Mr. Shaw said that everything else has been completed. The deadline is February. Anyone is welcome to make comments and recommendations. The committee discussed the current number of bicycle parking spaces, signage conformity and the bicycle route. Mr. Shaw explained Complete Streets, looking at the whole complete streets when redoing roads. Ms. Schleicher stated that Complete Streets is on the agenda for council meeting and she is hopeful that it will be adopted. Discuss the Status of the Marsh Hen Trail Ms. Schleicher stated that it is still in process with letter writing between the consultant and GDOT. She stated that she is hoping that it will be classified as shovel ready at some time this spring. Ms. Schleicher explained the funding is really not official until 2017. She said that if everything can be in place, and it gets shovel ready, it could be moved up to the Fall of 2016. Discuss the needed comprehensive bicycle route signage Mr. Shaw stated that he thought the work could be done in house. New Business Plan for Upcoming Bicycle Friendly Workshop with Bill Nesper, director of the Bicycle Friendly America program at the League of American Bicyclists the afternoon of Wednesday, November 18, 2015. Workshop includes riding the city’s bicycle route for recommendations. Mr. Bennett explained that this was the City’s opportunity to get input from the director on how to move up to Silver status. Ms. Schleicher stated that 1:00pm to 4:00pm would be the time. The committee continued to discuss the workshop. Discuss a possible annual night bicycling event with police escort to highlight the need for bicycle lights. Ms. Schleicher discussed the possibility of a night ride, getting lights donated, and educating bicyclists. The committee discussed the bike parade. Ms. Schleicher stated that she would put the parade on the agenda for next month’s meeting and discuss the possibility of partnering with the Y with Haley Hill. Discuss the possible reason bicyclist ride on sidewalks and ways to encourage safe riding on Hwy 80 (1st and Butler Avenue) Ms. Schleicher said that GDOT discussed striping of Hwy 80 and possibility of bike lanes. Ms. Schleicher stated that the City should begin thinking about ways to encourage bicyclists to stop riding on sidewalks. The committee discussed the logistics and possibilities on Butler/Hwy 80 of a bike lane. Flashing Beacon Pedestrian Crosswalk Warning signage scheduled for installation on Hwy 80 (1st and Butler Avenue) Mr. Schleicher requested the committee look at the flashing beacon lights and think about possibility on Jones. She stated that she has price quote. Ms. Schleicher asked that the committee look to see if the flashing beacons would make it safer for pedestrians on Jones. The meeting was adjourned.
